People are being warned by a travel blogger of “insane” prices on a Greek holiday hotspot and a hotel where she felt she was pressurised to give extra tips when leaving

Holidaymakers are being warned against heading to a Greek holiday hotspot with “insane” prices where you are also pressured into paying extra tips.

Travel blogger Christina Ford has vowed never to return to Mykonos after a recent experience on the picturesque island with the 63-year-old, who blogs as @insearchofmrdarcy on TikTok, saying she was handed a “rip-off” hotel bill. “This is insane. Mykonos, I don’t know what the hell’s going on with you,” she said as she complained that staff were pushing her to give tips on the already high prices.

Christina, who writes up her experiences of travelling the world alone, said she received a hotel bill when checking out that included the cost of her room, taxes on top of that, more government taxes, food she’d ordered and the pool – plus the taxes – and a tip. It was then she says staff approached her for more cash.

She continued: “I’m putting down my credit card, but they leave a little spot and they’re waiting for me. Two people standing over me. I go, ‘What’s this?’ They say, ‘Oh, to leave a tip’. This tipping service, this culture is getting crazy. Has anyone ever been asked to leave a tip on your room cost and tips you’ve already left? Mykonos, you’re out of your mind.”

According to MailOnline, Christina stayed at the hotel for three nights, at a rate of £593 a night. And while she liked the hotel, she was shocked by the tip request, refusing to pay the fee. She added: “In all my years of travel, I had never seen anything like this. I also believe that if I were Greek and not Canadian – often mistaken for American – I wouldn’t have been asked.”

It wasn’t her only bad experience on Mykonos, which she now claims to have blacklisted. In another video she claims she had a negative experience at several bars. She claims one bar told her she had to spend £84 – 100€ – to enter, despite being a “third full”. While another asked if she had a reservation and questioned why she was alone, even though it was “completely empty”.

In the video, Christina says she was refused entry into the bar, something she calls “discrimination”. Some viewers however criticised Christina for slamming the tourist destination. One said: “We don’t want tourists like you in Mykonos! Go to Miami for a vacation.” Another added: “Mykonos is the best island from any island anywhere in the world. I’ve been going since 1987, and if you can’t afford it don’t go…” However a third said: “Just had this conversation at the dinner table last night. Tipping culture is out of control!”
