Iron is an essential nutrient that our bodies need for a number of important reasons, but iron deficiency anaemia is a common issue among many Brits.

Per NHS guidelines, men aged 19 and over and women over 50 require 8.7mg of iron daily. For women between the ages of 19-49, this requirement increases to 14.8mg per day, and this amount may also be necessary for women experiencing periods after 50.

The majority should be able to get their required iron intake from their diet. However, some individuals might need to resort to iron supplements.

Approximately 3% of men and 8% of women in the UK suffer from iron deficiency anaemia. Typical symptoms include fatigue, lack of energy, and breathlessness.

And one sign could appear in your hair, if you notice more hair coming out when brushing or washing it. Other symptoms can include pale skin, heart palpitations, headaches, tinnitus, unusual taste in food, a sore tongue, and difficulty swallowing.

If you suspect you might have iron deficiency anaemia, it’s advisable to consult your GP. They will inquire about your medical history and lifestyle, and likely recommend a full blood count (FBC) test.
