Hairy Biker Dave Myers died in February after being diagnosed with cancer two years before, with his co-star Si King revealing how he is still reeling from his friend’s death
Hairy Biker Si King has spoken out about the sad way he’s dealt with his friend Dave Myers ‘ death, admitting it’s been a “struggle”.
The celebrity chef duo delighted fans with their travelling cookery shows, between 2004 and 2024. Over their time on TV, they hosted more than 30 series and specials for the BBC, Channel 5 and Good Food. But tragedy struck when Dave died in February, aged 66, following a cancer diagnosis. And now Si King, 57, is dealing with the aftermath of his co-star and pal’s passing, confessing at times he wanted to “clear off and never come back”.
Si, who previously admitted there is “no Hairy Bikers without Dave”, has spoken about the rollercoaster of emotions he’s had since February, saying he wanted to get on his bike and ‘head into the sunset’.
“Other times I was raging,” he told The Times. “Raging at that bloody disease, at God and anything else I could think of.”
Si admitted the last series was the hardest thing he’s “ever had to do”, with the crew and himself attempting to carry on and “trying not to lose it”.
He added: “Some days it felt quite surreal, as though it wasn’t really happening. I just kept thinking: it’s not fair, it’s not bloody fair.”
Si also revealed the conversation the pair had after Dave received his cancer diagnosis, saying: “When he called and told me about the cancer diagnosis in May 2022, it was a real body blow. I was struggling to know what to say, but then it dawned on me: I had to take my lead from Dave. He didn’t want people feeling sorry for him. He wanted to roll up his sleeves and get stuck in. It was all about the fight. He was a naturally optimistic character and always looking for the positives. You can’t lose hope, can you? If you lose that, what have you got left? We even had a laugh about it. A touch of black humour — in a suitably mild and appropriate fashion.”
Si also shared the poignant request his friend made during a conversation they had when he received his diagnosis. Si revealed: “Almost immediately, he said: ‘I want to get back to work. I don’t want to just be someone with cancer. I’m still me’.” The pair filmed their final series together, The Hairy Bikers Go West, after Dave’s diagnosis.
He added: “And he wanted to travel up and down the west coast of the UK — an area he loved and where he’d been born. Oh God, that last series was by the far the most difficult thing I’ve ever had to do in my entire life. The crew felt it too; some of whom had been with us since the start. All of us trying to carry on as normal, trying not to lose it. But that paled into insignificance compared with what Dave must have been going through.”
Dave, originally from Barrow-in-Furness, died in February this year, two years after sharing the news of his cancer diagnosis.
