Harry Redknapp has claimed only lifting the Europa League will save Spurs from a “disastrous season” as they should have finished in the top four. Ange Postecoglou’s side suffered a 15th Premier League defeat at Fulham to remain down in 13th place.

And with no chance of qualifying for European football through the league or relegation, the rest of the campaign rests on the Europa League quarter-final with Eintracht Frankfurt next month. But former Tottenham boss Redknapp said: “I don’t think winning the Europa League will make it a good season.

“To win something would be good for the club to win that trophy but it’s not Champions League, is it? To be where they are at the moment, it’s been a poor season. I looked at the squad at the start of the year, and I thought: ‘Yeah, they’re nailed on top four’.

“That’s what I saw them finishing this year. They’ve had injuries, but so have other clubs, and they’ve still got a squad strong enough that really should have done an awful lot better.

“But now it looks like they’ve got to win that, yeah. Otherwise, it’s a disastrous season if they don’t win that. It would be a write-off season.”

Tottenham’s last silverware was the 2008 League Cup under Juande Ramos. Asked if the former Celtic boss would survive finishing the season without winning a trophy, Redknapp added: “I don’t know – only Daniel Levy would know that. I was hoping that Ange came in and would do well. They’ve gone through so many managers.

“And when you look at the managers, one or two of them are doing OK in other clubs, at Nottingham Forest (Nuno Espirito Santo) and Napoli ( Antonio Conte ).

“Only Daniel would know. He is the only person who knows if he survives. But I hope he does, you know. He seems like a good guy. I don’t know him, but it is not an easy gig.

“But with that squad and that stadium, the training ground, it’s all in place, really. They’ve got to do better, and this is a poor season.”
