The traditional riverside market town is practically unheard of outside of northeast Yorkshire, but it still has a thriving market place on Saturdays and plenty else to offer

A charming market town, hailed as one of the UK’s finest, is seeing a dearth of tourists as visitors flock to a nearby seaside resort instead.

As the days lengthen and temperatures rise, thousands of Brits are plotting their weekend escapes. One such destination could be the market town of Malton in North Yorkshire. Known as one of the UK’s premier market towns, it has been luring visitors to its quaint lanes and bustling markets for years.

One local guide suggests that part of its charm lies in its resistance to mass tourism, preserving its traditional features. However, this means it sees far fewer tourists than a neighbouring coastal hotspot.

The idyllic riverside town remains largely unknown outside of northeast Yorkshire, yet its Saturday marketplace thrives, reports the Express.

Despite its cattle market being a mere echo of what it once was, the tranquil town of Malton is brimming with old-world independent businesses.

However, Bradt Guide reveals that many tourists bypass Malton, merely driving past on their way to resorts like Scarborough, Filey, and Whitby.

While many overlook Malton, the town boasts a rich history and was even dubbed the food capital of Yorkshire by Antonio Carluccio.

Malton, a town bursting with pride for its culinary offerings, is hailed by the Visit Malton website as a place “passionate about artisan producers, independent shops and great places to taste the delicious food and drink”.

The town boasts a plethora of spots to indulge in local fare, including Market Place, Talbot Yard, The Shambles, Wheelgate, and Saville Street.

Market Street, like many areas in Yorkshire, has seen a resurgence of interest, particularly as more Brits embrace the joys of staycations.

Visit Malton shared: “This once forgotten street is now one of the most loved destinations in Malton, packed with quirky, beautiful and buzzing shops and cafes.”

They added: “With a specialist gin and whisky shop, a vegan cafe, interiors boutiques and more. Market Street is packed with character and style.”

For early birds, the town’s vibrant cafes come highly recommended, especially one that’s a stone’s throw from a renowned whisky shop.

And if those options don’t tickle your fancy, Malton’s diverse array of eateries ensures there’s something to satisfy every palate.
