A fire at a leisure centre in Salford, Greater Manchester, has closed roads around the area as firefighters battle the huge flames sending plumes of smoke into the skies
Firefighters are tackling a huge blaze believed to be at a leisure centre which broke out earlier this morning and has sent plumes of smoke into the skies.
Residents nearby the fire in Salford, Greater Manchester reported being about to smell the fire at the nearby Clarendon leisure Centre. Many have been told to stay inside their homes and keep windows closed for the time being as the flames continue to erupt from the scene.
It is currently unknown what caused the blaze. Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue said on X, formerly Twitter at around 4.30am this morning: “Firefighters are currently tackling a fire involving a leisure centre off Liverpool Street in Salford. Residents nearby should keep windows and doors closed and people are asked to avoid the area while crews deal with the incident.”

Videos from the scene showed huge flames in the night’s sky at the venue in Liverpool Street. Firefighters nearby can be seen attempting to douse the blaze as smoke billows.
One witness told Manchester Evening News: “I work in Trafford Park and our workshop filled with smoke so we went to investigate… we could barely see in our yard it was that thick.”
Another person said: “I started to see it thinking that isn’t normal, then all of a sudden the smoke just started too get bigger and bigger and you can see the fire burning from the reflection of the buildings.
“It should be under control by now you would think so, been going on for quite a while now hasn’t it an hour or so, I can hear siren after siren, getting about. I can hear loads of police getting about been a good nearly hour now well coming up to an hour.”
