Mirror’s senior shopping writer Faith Richardson has tracked down the 3 best trending jackets to shop this spring under £70, including suede styles, barn jackets and floral prints

I don’t know if I’m being optimistic, but there definitely feels like a glimmer of spring is in the air. The lighter nights and mornings, rising temperatures and blue skies have all got me eager to ditch my oversized winter coats in favour of something a little more lightweight and versatile for the new season.

As we get ready to start rolling out our spring wardrobes, I tracked down three of the best jackets to shop this season, with three trending styles to choose from. From Boohoo’s suede barn jacket to SimplyBe’s waxed version and Next’s 2-in-1 reversible pick, these are the only three bits of outerwear you need.

Boohoo Suede Look Contrast Collar Barn Jacket, £35 (was £50)

Not only was this one of my absolute favourite styles, but it’s also the most affordable on my list, even before it was given such a hefty discount in the sale. Although a brand new launch at Boohoo, the Suede Barn Jacket has already landed in the mid-season sale for a limited time, slashing it from £50 to £35.

The reason this was my top choice is because it hits the trifecta of on trend, flattering and cool – all things I look for in a jacket. Suede is having a huge moment right now, and the dark green colour and contrasting brown cord collar give it a look that’s both timeless and trendy, whilst still looking different to other pieces on the market right now.

The oversized fit was big enough to get a chunky knit under so I can wear it when the temperatures drop, and the suede feels like great quality without being too heavy or stiff. The only issue is that it probably wouldn’t hold up against rainy showers – but this is true with any sueded jacket.

Next Floral Print Quilted Reversible Printed Jacket, £68

Whilst this is the priciest piece on my list, you’re also getting two different jackets in one, which means really you’re only spending £34 per jacket – definitely a winner. One side has a pink floral print that’s perfect for spring, whilst the other has a navy and white gingham print that’s one of the top-trending prints for spring.

Another roomy, oversized fit, this is ideal for those chunky jumpers and cardigans, but the quilting makes it deceptively warm too, so you can wear it with just a T-shirt or blouse underneath. It is a little stiff when you first wear it, but I love the structured silhouette that it gives, which makes it look so much more expensive than its price tag.

The sleeves are a great wide shape, and the boxy fit and patch pockets make it look modern and stylish. There are two ways to wear the collar – buttoned up or in a lapel style – and you can pick it up in both regular and petite sizes from an XS to a 2XL.

SimplyBe Black Cord Collar Waxed Jacket, £64

This was the best all rounder pick for me, with the waxed coating meaning it’s showerproof and the barn style design making it a great all rounder. The cord collar and cuffs add a little luxe edge to it, and the all-black colourway means you can get away with wearing this anywhere from the office to brunch.

I took my usual size and it’s slim fitting, so if you plan on layering underneath or want a more roomy fit I would size up, however I was still able to fit a knitted T-shirt underneath it no problem. You could easily wear it with anything from leggings and wellies to leather trousers, jeans and mini skirts, and its versatility makes it a neutral pick that you’ll get plenty of wear out of.

As with all SimplyBe clothes it’s available in a size 10 to a 32, and it stops at a flattering length at the top of your thigh that makes it look relaxed and effortless. You can also use the code FEB20 right now to save 20%, slashing the price to £51.20.
