Folk rock band Mumford & Sons were left in tears during a recent concert in Australia when a fan revealed she’d named her son after them.

While naming a child after a family member or a close friend that means a lot to you is a common way to honour someone, some might opt to name their children after their favourite actor or musician.

This was the case for Katrina Weynberg from Australia, who decided to name her son Mumford after the popular British band Mumford & Sons.

During the band’s concert in Sydney, Australia on March 17, Katrina got the band’s attention by holding a cardboard sign about having named her son after the band.

“We named our son Mumford and the band checked out his passport,” Katrina explained on the video.

Lead singer Marcus Mumford then reaches over to grab the proof that Katrina had brought with her – her son’s passport. Not believing it, Marcus opens up the passport in disbelief on stage as the rest of the band comes over to check out the passport for themselves.

As Marcus then gets to the right page in the passport, his mouths opens in disbelief, before getting moved to tears by their fan’s sweet gesture.

Despite the band’s approval of Katrina’s name choice for her son, viewers of the video weren’t convinced it was a good name as many claimed it was ‘weird’ to name him that.

“Mumford is my last name. it is not meant to be a first name. your kid is going to hate his name,” one person said.

“I’d be so upset if my parents named me Mumford. I’d be even more upset if I found out it was because of a band my mom was infatuated with,” a second person said.

“Mumford is a horrible name. What the hell?!” another viewer said, to which a fourth person said: “it’s not bad, just kinda dated. like eleanor.”

Katrina then went in to say: “Dated like good wine!”

However, others quickly came to the mum’s rescue, defending her name choices. One person said: “Everyone saying it’s a bad name – the kid can just go by Ford, which is a pretty normal name. It’s still a whole lot better than some of the other things I’ve seen kids get named after…”

Another person also said: “Maybe it’s just because I’m from Utah but Mumford isn’t even a bad name. It’s unique and cool.”
