Dominic Vose was a popular figure at Wrexham after scoring a wonder goal for the Welsh side and is now playing in the Baller League for a team managed by rapper Dave
A former Wrexham star who scored a goal dubbed the greatest in the club’s history is now turning out in the Baller League. Dominic Vose made 31 appearances for the Welsh side during the 2015-16 season.
The midfielder was a popular figure in his relatively short spell at the Racecourse Ground, where he scored eleven goals and was known for his attacking flair. Vose scored an amazing solo effort for the Red Dragons during a National League game against Gateshead in November 2015.
The ex-West Ham youngster picked up the ball just inside the opposition half following a quick free kick before dribbling past five opponents and firing home past the goalkeeper. A clip of the stunning goal was shared by Wrexham on YouTube under the heading ‘THE BEST GOAL IN 151 YEARS! Dom Vose scores our best ever goal’ and has attracted more than 500,000 views.
Vose was sold by Wrexham to then-League One side Scunthorpe United in February 2016 for an undisclosed fee. He struggled to break into the first team in Lincolnshire and has since become a journeyman after turning out for a large number of clubs, mostly in the lower reaches of English football.
However, Vose is now embarking on an exciting new chapter in his career at the age of 31 after being picked to play in the newly-formed Baller League. The competition kicked off at the Copper Box Arena in London on Monday night and sees former football professionals and YouTubers go head-to-head in charge of small-sided teams.
This six-a-side league includes 12 teams, each featuring a range of talent, from ex-Premier League footballers and futsal players to familiar faces from the influencer world, including league president KSI. Vose scored on his debut for Santan FC, managed by UK rapper Dave, slotting home the opener in a 6-4 victory over Trebol FC, coached by Real Madrid legend Luis Figo.
The origins of the Baller League can be traced back to Germany, where it was started by entrepreneur Felix Starck, along with German international Mats Hummels, and ex-Arsenal forward Lukas Podolski. Managers in the league include the likes of Gary Lineker, John Terry and Alan Shearer.
As far as Vose is concerned, many Wrexham fans remember him fondly, but his departure in February 2016 was not without controversy. The midfielder previously told NorthWalesLive he wanted to stay and help the club in its quest for promotion from non-league football.
However, he claimed he was left with little choice other than to leave after a bid from National League rivals Grimsby Town was accepted by Wrexham. Vose then pursued a move to Scunthorpe, believing that he was surplus to requirements at the Racecourse under manager Gary Mills.
He said at the time: “My agent spoke to Gary and felt that he was going to go in a different direction regarding me and that I wasn’t likely to feature again, so I didn’t want to stay there and not play football.
“It showed the intention of accepting the bid from a rival club in Grimsby, it just showed what direction the club wanted to go regarding me. That spoke volumes to me.”
Vose’s claims were later refuted by Wrexham CEO Don Bircham, who said the decision to allow him to leave was purely for footballing reasons. “The manager had made a decision that Dominic wasn’t part of his plans, so it as purely for footballing reasons and nothing else,” said Bircham.
“There was absolutely no pressure from the board whatsoever, in fact we talked it through very carefully with Gary to make sure he was doing the right thing. But it was purely a football decision and we have to respect the manager.”
As well as turning out in the Baller League, Vose also currently plays for Carshalton Athletic in the Isthmian Premier League after previously enjoying a stint with Magni Grenivik in Iceland.
