One man took on the challenge of feeding himself for a week by spending less than £1 per day at Aldi amid the cost of living crisis.

The cost of groceries have been rising far above the rate of inflation, and YouTuber Karl Tabley took it upon himself to hunt for the most affordable food items he could find at the famous budget supermarket.

Documenting his challenge, Karl began by taking a trip to his local Aldi as he tried to pick up some bargains.

After adding the total cost of his groceries for the week, the cost came in at just £6.95, which worked out at less than £1 on food per day.

However, he was able to bulk out his options for the week by making use of the more natural nearby – and free – food resources.

In a bid to add to his haul, Karl decided to take a trip to some nearby fruit trees to see what he could find, saying: “In order to improve on my challenge for £1 a day, I’m going to put a bit more focus this time around on free stuff. One of them would be the blackberries and then you’ve got these yellow plums.”

With his plums, he made jams while he used bacon in his lentil stew as well as adding it to his potato curry to sustain him through the full seven days of the challenge.

The YouTuber also made sure that he found as many ways as possible to put each item to good use, trying to use each ingredient in as many different ways as he could.

Purchasing the back bacon for just £1, he managed to include it in his lentil soup as well as his potato curry, making sure that he used every last rasher.

He also made sure to batch cook a number of the dishes including a lentil and bacon stew, potato curry, and a chilli bean wrap.

Meanwhile, he would start his mornings by adding berries to a simple yet tasty porridge for his first meal of the day and would also use apples and a plum jam after picking the fruit at the start of the week.

As the week finally drew to a close, he reflected on his efforts, pointing out the chilli bean wrap was a particular favourite: “I think I did a good job of that challenge, I mixed it up, I made different meals.

“So, main meals wise, we’ve had the potato curry, the lentil stew, the chilli beans were lovely, they went really well in the wrap this lunchtime.”
