The chip shop serves squid, crab and truffle chips
A man has visited the poshest fish and chip shop in London for the first time and found a major issue. Carmie Sellitto boasts 1.3 million followers on TikTok, where he tries out various eateries and finds out if they are worth their often-steep price tags.
The 26-year-old Londoner decided to put one of the nation’s favourite meals in the hot seat this week, visiting The Mayfair Chippy. Based in the affluent Mayfair area of the capital, the glossy eatery offers in-restaurant dining as well as classic takeaway options.
The menu features classics including battered cod, hake or haddock with chips, plus posh additions including soft shell crab, Cornish squid, cod roe, and even truffle chips. Carmie opted for the steeply-priced ‘Mayfair Classic’ of battered cod, chips, mushy peas, tartare sauce, and curry sauce for £18.50 – but was left sorely disappointed by one standout issue, sharing his review in a post that has racked up 360,000 views.
“I think the fish was soggier than usual,” Carmie said. “Maybe I had a bad batch, but I would stick to a more local fish and chip shop for the future.”
In the TikTok, Carmie unveils the boujie blue box, before saying it smells “absolutely unreal” and lauding the size of the fish. He says: “The good thing about these fries is they are quite crispy and not soggy.”
But when he lifts the fish up, he describes it as soggy – though notes he added lemon juice, and shows a large amount of batter attached. He says: “I don’t know how I feel about this. It kind of feels like a waste.
“Look at it – the fish is not that big.” Carmie immediately didn’t like the curry sauce – which he mistook for gravy – and rated it a 4/10. But he enjoyed both the mushy peas and that tartare sauce.
Finally, he gave his verdict on the entire meal. He says: “I’m going to be so real with you guys, I’m going to rate this an easy 6.5/10.
“I think you could find better fish and chips somewhere like Birmingham – and that’s saying something.” The post garnered thousands of comments, with some Mayfair Chippy fans defending the eatery, and others offering recommendations for a better meal.
One person commented: “You need to go Yorkshire for fish and chips.” “Mayfair chippy is the best!!!! That’s coming from a northerner,” another wrote.
Someone else advised: “Always get fish and chips from somewhere on the coast.” “You need to go by the seaside to taste a good one. In London it is not great,” another user agreed.
Another viewer described it as a “painful watch”. Carmie previously put KFC chicken to the taste – reviewing it versus a £16 similar offering from Harrods. While the fish and chips dish wasn’t quite to his taste, Carmie rated the expensive Harrods as higher than the famous fast food joint’s recipe.
