A woman is considering bailing on her friend’s big day after trying on her ‘unflattering’ bridesmaid dress – but her decision has sparked debate online, with some dubbing her ‘unreasonable’

A woman is having doubts about being a bridesmaid after trying on her ‘unflattering’ outfit.

Being part of a couple’s big day is an honour most friends can’t wait for – unless you’re Rachel from Friends and have to wear a poofy pink dress that makes you look like a doll. But for one woman, the idea has turned sour for a slew of reasons.

She claims she is ‘terrified’ of the idea of having to be photographed next to the younger ‘more glamorous’ bridesmaids – as she’s the eldest in the party, and says she ‘just feels like I’m too old for all of this s**t’. To make matters worse – she’s trying to lose weight to fit into her dress but says the extra pounds refuse to come off.

Taking to Mumsnet, the anonymous woman claims she is also an hour’s drive away from the venue and is expected to arrive early in the morning to get ready with the bride – leaving a two-hour round trip for her husband. “The outfit doesn’t fit me and I have to lose weight to get into it (it’s off the peg and I don’t know how easily it can be adjusted,” the post reads.

“The size bigger was just as unflattering. Also, I can’t wear a bra with it. I’m trying to lose weight but am menopausal and it’s just not coming off.” The woman claims she feels ‘awful’ about dropping out but says the idea of having to fulfil her bridesmaid duties is now making her ‘feel sick’.

Swathes of users flocked to the comments section to share their thoughts, with many siding with the stressed-out bridesmaid. “Just tell her you’d rather come as a guest. If she’s your friend, she’ll understand,” one person wrote.

Another agreed, commenting: “Just be absolutely honest and tell her everything you’ve said to us here. I’d be heartbroken if my friend had been putting herself through hell trying to lose weight for a dress and worrying.” While a third added: “It’s supposed to be fun. If it’s not fun you don’t do it.”

However, others slammed the woman for making the big day about her. “I find this really sad,” fumed one user. “It’s your friend’s wedding. If it’s someone you actually care about, can’t you just focus on her and celebrating a nice occasion, rather than your looks?” Another dubbed the woman ‘unreasonable’ and urged her to speak to the bride about her concerns before revoking her bridesmaid status.
