A man who spectacularly dashed out of a barber’s mid-haircut to stop a policeman from being attacked has said it was simply an “instinct” for him to help.
Kyle Whiting was having his head shaved at Haron Barber’s in Warrington, Cheshire on Tuesday when he spotted the shocking assault on the officer outside through the mirror in front of him. Footage of the incident shows Kyle, who was still wearing his cape, running over to drag the man away as passersby gather around to help. Moments later, an officer from an unmarked police car also runs over to assist the stricken officer. A 50-year-old man was arrested at the scene. Now, ‘haircut hero’ Kyle has explained why he stepped in to help – and revealed what happened afterwards.
The 32-year-old had made the quick trip to the barber’s after taking his girlfriend Warrington Hospital following an injury to her leg, as it was taking so long for her to be seen. Upon witnessing the assault on the officer outside, he pinned the attacker down, held the back of his arm and put his knee on his back, letting assisting officers take over once they arrived on the scene.
Kyle then strolled back in to the barber’s to have his haircut finished. Once he was done, he drove back to wait with his girlfriend at the hospital – and ended up sat next to the police officer who he had just rescued.
He told the MailOnline: “Once he was detained, I just went back in for my haircut and then went back into the hospital. And sat right next to us is the police officer that had just been assaulted. One of the police officers that was on scene sent me a message through messenger as well to say ‘thank you so much for your support’.”
Kyle described it as “instinct” for him to jump in and revealed that his sister is a police officer, who he would want others to help was she ever in the same position. The attacked policeman told him in hospital he had suffered a hand injury from landing awkwardly on the floor, he added.
A Cheshire Constabulary spokesperson said: “Officers have thanked a member of the public for his support after an officer was assaulted in Warrington. The incident occurred at around 11.40am on Tuesday, 17 December in the Lovely Lane area. As the assault was taking place a member of the public from a nearby hairdressers intervened to assist the officer. A 50-year-old man was subsequently arrested in relation to the matter. He has since been passed to the care of health professionals.”
