Hotel worker Halee has 15 years experience in the hospitality industry, and has warned tourists to think twice before entering their hotel room and flicking the lights on – all thanks to a rather grim reason

There’s a skin-crawling reason why should always enter your hotel room in the dark…

If you’re thinking of jetting off for some much-needed sun while the UK cools down into its usual dreary state, there’s an important word of advice you should follow. While it’s tempting after a long flight or gruelling coach transfer to collapse onto your hotel bed and get some much needed kip before officially starting your holiday – it might not be wise.

Travel ace Halee has more than 15 years of experience working in hotel sales, and has amassed a whopping 127,000 followers online thanks to her handy tips and tricks. In a recent TikTok video, the hotel expert urged all tourists not to flick the lights in when entering their room – as this could help bed bugs go unnoticed.

She recommends thoroughly checking your bed, including beneath the mattress protector, for the little critters which can wreck havoc on your skin and clothes. “The first thing you’re going to do is make sure your room is dark,” Halee added. “Turn off lights [or keep them turned off], close any shades and use the flashlight on your phone… Also pay attention if there’s a mattress pad too. Even if you don’t see bugs, make sure you check for spots – like blood spots – cause that’s not a good sign either.”

Thousands of terrified viewers rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts, with many explaining how they always search for bed bugs before getting comfy in a new hotel room. “I work as a housekeeper at an IHG hotel and I check every bed when I go into a room and I clean from top to bottom,” one user wrote.

Another agreed, commenting: “Bed bugs do not discriminate! I’ve been made fun of for checking everywhere I go but if you ever get them, you KNOW!” A third admitted their fear of bed bugs affects which establishment they book, adding: “I also always go on every review site and search ‘bugs’ in the reviews for any hotel before I stay,” while a fourth wrote: “I had bedbugs years ago and now I’m THAT person who ferociously checks every hotel and Airbnb.” Many users also pointed out the importance of keeping your luggage closed and away from the bed until you’ve carried out your inspection. If bed bugs get into your suitcase – you’re probably going to have to say goodbye to all of your clothes…
