Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana has struggled to live up to expectations since joining the club last year and has now been called out by former England stopper David James

David James feels Andre Onana has failed to add an extra dimension to Manchester United’s game since joining the club from Inter Milan.

The Cameroon goalkeeper, 28, joined the Red Devils for £47million last year after Erik ten Hag and the club decided to dispense with the services of long-time No.1 David de Gea.

Onana went on to endure a mixed maiden campaign in the Premier League after some high-profile errors but has enjoyed a strong start to the new season and saved a penalty in the 3-0 win over Southampton earlier this month.

But that hasn’t endeared him to James, with the former England and Manchester City keeper admitting he has been left “frustrated” with Onana’s contributions at Old Trafford.

“I’m frustrated with what Onana has brought to the club since he joined from Inter Milan,” James told SafestCasinoSites.

“When he signed from Inter, I was expecting him to have a transformative effect on the way that Manchester United play. I wanted him to bring that ball-playing ability to the team, that passing range.

“For whatever reason, Andre Onana hasn’t been the best version of himself since he joined the club and that’s disappointing. They wanted a keeper who was good with his feet and could pick pinpoint passes over long distances, because that brings variety to your play. That is what Onana is capable of, and we haven’t seen it at United.”

James went on to question whether or not Ten Hag and United’s coaching staff were partly culpable for Onana’s failure to live up to expectations before stating that he doesn’t feel the keeper is among the top six currently playing in the Premier League, though he could potentially reach those levels in time.

He added: “You always look at the individual first and wonder why they’re not performing. Is the problem Erik ten Hag and his coaching staff? It doesn’t make sense that he’s not doing the things that United signed him for when he pulls on the shirt.

“I look at Arsenal’s signing of David Raya. He is starting to fulfil the potential that the club saw in him when they signed him, and you could say that he is the best version of himself at Arsenal. That simply isn’t the case for Onana at Manchester United.

“Onana isn’t the best goalie in the league. At the moment, I wouldn’t put him in the top six, but he’s more than capable of getting there. I want to see him improve.”
