If you’re looking for a vibrant staycation or even a great place to take a day trip, then this UK town offers the same quirky charm as Notting Hill.

While many of us are itching to get away to sunnier destinations, it’s easy to forget that Britain offers a wealth of attractions, rich in culture and history. For those looking to save money on flights and explore an exciting area closer to home, this English town has been labelled one of the best places for a spring getaway.

According to The Independent, Bruton, Somerset is one of Britain’s poshest towns, perfect for a springtime trip. In their ranking, they selected locations which possessed enticing high streets, “fancy” bakeries and which held an air of “gentility”.

With its old stone cottages and cutesy high street, Bruton definitely fits the bill. Plus, the surrounding scenery of rolling hills also lends it a romantic charm.

The publication even likened it to London’s famous Notting Hill. They wrote: “Bijou Bruton, hidden in Somerset’s rural folds, is the Notting Hill of the South West, beloved of artsy London types.”

They continued: “That’s thanks to being pretty as a picture, reachable by train and home to Hauser & Wirth – the global gallery opened an outpost here in 2014, on 18th-century Durslade Farm.”

Bruton is also a foodie paradise, with many award-winning eateries to choose from. The town is home to the Michelin-starred restaurant Osip and the Italian bistro Da Costa, which is featured in the Michelin Guide.

For pastry-lovers, there is the “hip” bakery-restaurant, At The Chapel, which serves everything from the classic almond croissant to delectable Westcombe cheese straws. It also has a varied in-house wine menu.

The town also has plenty of gems for those looking for a swanky night out. Bruton is home to the new Roth Bar which The Independent describes it as “a junkyard-inspired art installation-cum-food and cocktails”.

Situated in the Hauser & Wirth gallery, the bar allows you to sip classic cocktails, wine and a variety of ciders while appreciating the selection of contemporary and modern art. Some of their signature cocktails include the Coffee Caramel Sazerac and the Walnut Bloody Mary.

One TripAdvisor reviewer wrote: “Stunning bar, look at the installation of curiosities above the bar. Friendly relaxed staff, with a beautiful sun trap outside.”

In terms of historical attractions, King Alfred’s Tower stands nearby. Built in 1722, it commands a view over three counties and it is believed to be the site where King Alfred the Great rallied his troops. It commands views over three counties.
