Liu Damei, a single mum and influencer who shared videos of herself dancing and singing online, died just hours after undergoing liposuction at the Yancheng Manlisha clinic

A young influencer mum-of-one died hours after undergoing liposuction at a dodgy clinic that was fined for letting untrained staff carry out treatments just days before her operation.

33-year-old Liu Damei was famous in her hometown of Yancheng, in China’s Jiangsu province, for posting videos of herself dancing on social media. According to a friend, she died just hours after undergoing what appears to have been a botched liposuction procedure.

Liu died on November 26 after undergoing the procedure at the Yancheng Manlisha clinic, her friend said. She ran a foot massage shop and was a single mother to her 10-year-old son.

She was seen locally as an internet star and regularly shared insights into her life on Douyin, the name for TikTok in China. Liu shared live streams of herself singing and dancing, which drew her an online following.

Just before her death, she shared her excitement with her fans about the upcoming surgery, saying how she was looking forward to obtaining a perfect figure. Yandu Police Station has confirmed that the Yancheng Manlisha clinic where she underwent the procedure is being investigated over her death.

It has also emerged that the clinic had been fined CNY 10,000 (£1,375) by the Yandu District Health Commission of Yancheng for using medical personnel to perform diagnostic and treatment activities outside their area of expertise. That fine was imposed on November 9, just 17 days before Liu underwent her procedure and died.

The Yandu District Health Commission of Yancheng also confirmed the case is being investigated but could not provide further details. Yancheng Manlisha has not provided comment so far on the case.

It comes after a 26-year-old mum died after undergoing a Brazilian butt lift (BBL) in Turkey where she received “woeful” aftercare. Demi Agoglia’s family tried to convince her she did not need the operation as she was a “good-looking girl” but she was determined and flew to Turkey on January 4 with her partner, Bradley Jones. But just four days later, after undergoing the operation, she died in a hospital in Istanbul.

Following the operation Ms Agoglia was “shaking” and appeared “very, very cold”, said Mr Jones. Staff from Comfort Zone were called to the villa after Ms Agoglia complained of a tight chest and they checked her blood pressure but did not inspect the area of the operation or check her heart rate and pulse, the inquest heard.

Ms Agoglia collapsed at the villa the following day and was taken back to Avrasya Hospital where she died. The surgeon who conducted the operation later told Mr Jones they had done everything they could. It later emerged that the Comfort Zone staff who were called out to the villa were not qualified nurses.
