Eerie images show the remnants of an abandoned funeral home stuffed full of coffins, embalming fluids, and rotting hearses. The forgotten property, a family run funeral home, had operated in rural Georgia, US for over half a century before being left to rot.

The haunting contents of the dilapidated parlour include clothes intended for dressing the deceased still hanging up in a wardrobe and a bucket lined with plastic at the bottom of the mortician’s table as if ready for embalming to occur. There is also a large room full of wooden pews where funeral services would have been conducted.

Established in the 1960s, the small family-run business served the local community for decades – but sadly the funeral home went out of business in 2020. The stark pictures were snapped by urban explorer Leland Kent, also known online as Abandoned Southeast.

“For more than half a century, this small funeral business located in rural Georgia has served the local community,” said Leland. “The funeral home was family-owned and operated for its entire existence.

“Following the death of the original owner, the business was taken over by his son and brother, who continued to run it until one passed away and the other retired. Since its last funeral nearly five years ago, the building has remained abandoned, yet a family member still cares for the property.

“On some days you may find him cutting grass or trimming the hedges around the building. As for the funeral home, its future remains uncertain. The building itself is in a state of disrepair and would have to be restored to code in order to become operational. As for now, with each passing day, the funeral home sits vacant.”

In 2024, Leland was shocked to discover the secrets of an abandoned boarding house completely surrounded by a family graveyard – with the former owners buried on site. Despite the morbid surroundings, images show the time capsule boarding house where the exterior is falling apart.

But by some miracle the interior of the house is pristine with beds made up ready to welcome weary travellers the family would have catered for, with the dinner table still set as if a meal is still ready to be served.

A calendar on the wall indicated the date as December 1958 – but newspapers scattered around the house are dated in the mid 1990’s. There is also a graveyard on site with tombstones dedicated to “mother and father”, the only clear date indicated is 1884-1962 which means the father passed away at 78 years-old.

And earlier this month, we reported on a boarded-up home with a red “keep out” warning painted on the door has gone on the market for a whopping £325,000. The empty, three-bedroom detached property is described as being in need of “complete renovation”. It is listed as having an energy efficiency rating of F – the second lowest.
