Looking to get away to a beautiful island without dealing with the crowds? This Greek getaway offers beautiful views, massive caves and a majestic beach that splits the sea in two

Hot weather, beautiful beaches and feeling like the only person on earth: it often feels like only two of these three are attainable. Luckily, this one little-known Greek island can offer holiday goers the unicorn travel experience.

Few things will ruin a sunny getaway faster than having to fight your way through crowds of tourists just to find a patch to plant your umbrella on the beach. Unfortunately, it appears to be a growing problem, especially on the med. Last year, the Greek government placed a cruise ship tax on the popular islands of Mykonos and Santorini to help curb over tourism.

So, if you’re looking to travel to Greece this summer, you might want to try Kythnos instead. This sun-drenched island is complete with secluded beaches, beautiful sunsets and natural hot springs inside its small town of Loutra. Even more enticing, it boasts unique and massive caves, making it ideal for those who love cave exploring.

According to GreekReporter.com: “This Greek island is a real draw for spelunkers with the biggest caves anywhere in the Cyclades! Besides this, the island has a rich history and has been inhabited since early antiquity. The secluded Greek island is home to many mysterious rock paintings that date back some 5,000 years.”

Some of the little island’s most beautiful beaches include Lefkes Beach, Apokrousi Beach and Skilou Beach. Most of these feature soft sand and are surrounded by delicious restaurants and bars.

However, the most awe-inspiring undoubtedly is Kolona Beach, which features a sand bar that literally splits the sea in two. One TripAdvisor reviewer described their experience: “Kolona Beach in Kithnos is simply stunning! The unique sandbar separating two crystal-clear bays is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The water is warm and inviting, perfect for a refreshing swim. The serene atmosphere made it a perfect spot to relax and soak in the natural beauty. A true gem of the Cyclades!”

Adventure lovers will also be delighted to know that there are plenty of water activities available, including kayaking, canoeing and private boat hire. You can spend your days exploring the nearby islands and snorkelling in the warm, crystal-clear waters, before docking back in a hidden sandy bay to dry off. One TripAdvisor reviewer described their kayaking experience: “Even though it’s an island that doesn’t have a lot of trees or green in general, it was very beautiful and mesmerizing!”

Wondering where to stay? The island is home to plenty of tavernas, with rooms going from just £57. In terms of getting to the island, you can fly straight from London to Santorini, then get a seven-hour ferry to Kythnos for as little as £17.
