At least 11 people are known to have been killed in a mass shooting at the Campus Risbergska, in Sweden, and students at the school have told of the horror of seeing people shot
A student has told of seeing “blood everywhere” and not knowing if bodies on the ground were “dead or injured” during the Sweden school massacre.
Sweden has suffered its worst mass shooting with at least 11 people having been killed by a gunman at an adult education centre in Campus Risbergska, Obrebro, around 125 miles west of Stockholm.
The gunman’s motive, as well as the number of wounded, are not known for certain still but police have said how difficult it is to count the number of dead among the carnage. It is known that the campus offers schooling for adults aged over 20 and that many students were not in attendance because they had gone home following a national exam.
Footage showed people fleeing the campus during the shooting which began at around 12.30pm on Tuesday while many others were forced to barricade themselves in rooms.
Social media images show people hiding in classrooms as the gunman, who is believed to be among the dead, went on the rampage. He is reportedly aged around 35 and used an automatic weapon while it is believed he used equipment to create smoke inside the school.
A 16-year-old student called Linn, who goes to a school near the campus has told of the horrific scenes she saw. “I was standing there, watching what was happening, and I was just around here when I saw some bodies lying on the ground. I don’t know if they were dead or injured,” she said, reported news.com.au. “There was blood everywhere, people were panicking and crying, parents were worried… it was chaos.”
A person who knows a teacher at the school says that he received a text message a while ago. “He wrote that there was shooting with automatic weapons at the school and that they had taken shelter in a room. Then he wrote that he loved me,” they stated.
Lena Warenmark, a teacher at Campus Risbergska School, told SVT News that she was confined to her study for just over an hour. “Before that, we heard gunshots very close to our study. There were probably 10 shots,” she said, while describing a few bangs first in short succession, a short pause and then a few more. Head teacher of the school, Mokhtar Bennis, wrote a text message saying: “I’m inside Risbregska and I’ve got difficulty talking.”
A student called Marwa, said she tried to save the life of a person who had been shot before police arrived. “A guy next to me was shot in the shoulder. He was bleeding a lot. When I looked behind me I saw three people on the floor bleeding. Everyone was shocked, they said ‘Go out! Get out!” she told the BBC. “Me and my friend tried to save the life of this person. People were very shocked,” she continued. “I took my friend’s shawl and tied it tightly around his shoulder so that he wouldn’t bleed so much.”
Authorities are working to identify the deceased, and police said the toll could rise. There were no warnings beforehand with police believing the perpetrator acted alone and they have not said if he was a student at the school.
