This European village gives travellers to option to fly and flop, or explore the beautiful surroundings for a fraction of the price.

Holidaymakers looking to avoid the hefty price tag of the luxurious Maldives may not have to compromise at all by opting for a closer option within Europe.

The south-Asian islands of the Maldives are renowned for their over-water bungalows, serene surroundings and pure relaxation. But travellers trying to find this without the long-distance and the expense may like to consider the small coastal village of Ksamil in southern Albania, often dubbed a hidden gem.

Ksamil is a small coastal village located 7.4 miles south of Saranda, between the Ionian Sea and the Butrint Lagoon, within the Butrint National Park. Its proximity to Corfu, Greece, makes it even more appealing, as you can take a 30-minute ferry ride for just £24. With a population of fewer than 3,000 residents, Ksamil offers the perfect escape for those seeking tranquillity and relaxation. The village is famous for its turquoise waters, white sandy beaches, and laid-back Mediterranean atmosphere.

The ideal time to visit Ksamil is between June and September, when temperatures range from 25C to 32C, While the village is relatively small, it attracts both international tourists and locals escaping the hustle and bustle of the capital.

From Tirana Airport, the journey takes approximately 5.5 hours by bus, car, or taxi, and for those flying into Corfu Airport a 30-70 minute ferry to Albania, followed by a 10-30 minute taxi or bus ride will get you to Ksamil. London Stansted Airport and London Luton Airport are the only London-based airports offering direct flights to Tirana and Corfu. Prices start at £100 during off-peak months (February-May) and can rise to £235 during peak season (June-September).
