Regular Lorraine guest Dr Amir Khan simply said ‘it’s not worth it’
ITV’s resident doctor, Dr Amir Khan, has dropped a health warning on social media as he told fans that “it’s not worth it! ” The full-time GP and TV regular from shows like This Morning and Lorraine is also known for dishing out medical advice to his Instagram followers.
And in his latest update, Dr Amir tackled a topic that might make some squirm: earwax. He said: “Let’s talk about earwax. It may sound gross, but earwax is a key component to keeping our ears healthy, bacteria-free, and functioning well.”
Most people’s ears can handle earwax without any interference, he explained, but if there’s a blockage, olive oil drops could be the answer, helping the wax exit naturally. But whatever you do, don’t reach for those cotton buds, he warned.
He said: “One thing I would never advise is the use of cotton bud sticks to clean the ears. It may feel good to stick a cotton bud inside of your ear, and it may come out with a little bit of wax on which makes you feel like you’ve cleaned it, but all you’ve done is push that wax further down your ear.”
This common mistake could lead to a total blockage or even damage the eardrum, resulting in bleeding, bruising, and other nasty outcomes, according to the doctor.
Captioning the post he said: “Honestly the number of perforated ear drums I’ve seen and the number of broken cotton bud tips I’ve had to fish out of my patients ears – it’s not worth it!
“Cotton bud sticks are not for your ears and they’re terrible for the environment – I know it might feel satisfying but you could be doing more harm than good!”
