Julie Etchingham apologises after saying Keir Starmer will meet The Queen

ITV News’ Julie Etchingham issued an apology as she made a huge error.

Upon Sir Keir Starmer’s arrival at Buckingham Palace to officially be made the Prime Minister after a significant landslide victory for Labour during the General Election, she revealed who Sir Keir would be meeting. However, many fans on social media picked up on a very awkward blunder which was made by Julie.

Ex-Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his party were left as the Opposition after Sir Keir Starmer and the Labour Party secured a whopping 412-seat majority. Elsewhere, the Tories were left redfaced after losing 250 seats, managing to win just 121. Sir Ed Davey and the Liberal Democrats secured their best vote in history, gaining 63 seats, taking their total to 71.

But moments after Sunak left Buckingham Palace, having handed his resignation to King Charles, Julie announced to viewers that Sir Keir had arrived at the Monarch’s official residence to be invited to form a government. Prime Ministers are asked by the Sovereign to form a government in their name after the previous government has been dissolved.

As Sir Keir exited his Range Rover, Julie said: “Being welcomed by The King’s private secretary, Lady Victoria Starmer, alongside him. Welcomed in to go to see The Queen. To see The King, forgive me, to see The King to be invited to form a new government and what a moment that must be for him as he contemplates what lies ahead.”

The moment, however, didn’t go unnoticed with fans instantly flocking to X, formerly known as Twitter about it. “Big mistake on ITV there. Saying Starmer is about to meet The Queen.” “Ouch,” commented a second. Moments after departing Buckingham Palace having been made the Prime Minister, outside 10 Downing Street, Sir Keir said: “Thank you. Good afternoon, I have just returned from Buckingham Palace where I accepted an invitation from His Majesty The King to form the next government for this great Nation.

“I want to thank the outgoing prime minister Rishi Sunak. His achievement as the first British-Asian prime minister of our country, the extra effort that, that will have required, should not be underestimated by anyone. And we paid tribute to that today. We also recognise the dedication and hard work he brought to his leadership.” He added: “My Government will serve you, politics can be a force for good.”

Reflecting on the job at hand, Sir Keir added: “The work of change begins immediately, but have no doubt, we will rebuild Britain.”

In a statement, Buckingham Palace said: “The King received in Audience The Right Honourable Sir Keir Starmer MP today and requested him to form a new Administration. Sir Keir accepted His Majesty’s offer and kissed hands upon his appointment as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury.”
