Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has spoken about his media career – and the Liverpool legend snubbed Match of the Day in his list of best football TV shows
Jamie Carragher snubbed Match of the Day as he listed the best football shows on TV.
The Liverpool legend hung up his boots in 2013 and soon signed a deal to become a Sky Sports pundit. Often teaming up with former foe Gary Neville, Carragher has become one of the most prominent analysts in the sport.
Carragher, 46, spent his playing days at Liverpool, winning nine major trophies with the Reds, including the 2005 Champions League. Asked about ambitions for his media career, Carragher admitted he is proud of his work so far – and notably left out Match of the Day when discussing the best football programmes on TV.
“I want to be the best at what I do. I love the fact that I can look back at my football career and go, 17 years at Liverpool, 737 games. it’s a good chunk of my life, a good thing,” Carragher said on the StillTalkingShow podcast. “I want to do that with the TV and football, doing the best shows.
“I think I’m on the two best football shows, in terms of Monday Night Football and the CBS Show that we do that goes out in America, but you see the clips online for the Champions League. So, I’m on the best show on the Premier League, the best show on the Champions League.
“And I think I’m on the best podcast–besides your own–on Stick to Football. I get stopped in the street by people about all three shows I’ve just mentioned there. That makes me proud but I want to keep going, making the best TV, and keep pushing it to be as good as it possibly can be.”

His work with Sky, as well as joining Thierry Henry and Micah Richard on CBS, has ensured Carragher remains a household name with football fans. However, the Liverpool icon’s omission of Match of the Day shows that Carragher does not consider the BBC’s flagship show at the top of the pile.
It was confirmed in November that Gary Lineker, who has hosted Match of the Day since 1999, will be stepping down as presenter at the end of the season. In December, it was reported that Sky Sports presenter Kelly Cates would be one of three new hosts next season, sharing the job with Mark Chapman and Gabby Logan, in a major shake-up for the show.
Cates joining Match of the Day would be a huge blow for Sky Sports, having established herself as one of the broadcaster’s leading presenters since rejoining in 2016. The 49-year-old already works for BBC Sport as a host on Radio Five Live.
