Air fryers have revolutionised the way we cook, speeding up everything from a humble jacket potato to a mouth-watering chicken curry. Not only does this gadget make cooking faster, but it also makes it healthier – think fried eggs without the oil.

If you’re running out of ideas for your air fryer, celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has been sharing an array of recipes specifically designed for this appliance. One such recipe is his “super easy” cheddar cheese and chive scones, which take just 10 minutes to prep and 12 minutes to cook.

On his website, Jamie raved: “Let me show you how well you can bake in the air fryer – this is a brilliant little recipe that I know you’re going to love.”

He described the scones as: “These savoury scones are absolutely delicious – crispy and golden, but also fluffy inside – and you can knock them together really quickly.”

Perfect served with soup, salad or as part of a ploughman’s lunch, these savoury scones are versatile and open to experimentation.

As Jamie suggests: “Serve with soup, salad or as part of a ploughman’s lunch. And once you’ve given these a try, why not take them in a different direction or give a sweet version a whirl – the possibilities are endless.”

Ingredients

  • 200g self-raising flour, plus extra for dusting
  • One teaspoon baking powder
  • One teaspoon English mustard powder
  • Cayenne pepper
  • 75g unsalted butter (cold)
  • 120g mature cheddar cheese
  • 20g chives
  • 70ml milk, plus extra for brushing
  • Olive oil
  • 200g light cream cheese
  • One lemon

Method

Kick off by sieving the flour, baking powder and mustard powder into a bowl, then season with a hearty pinch of cayenne pepper and sea salt.

Next, dice the butter into cubes and use your fingertips to work it into the flour mixture until you’re left with small, cornflake-like pieces.

Grate in 100g of the cheese, finely chop the chives and stir everything together, reports the Express.

Create a well in the centre, pour in the milk, and combine it all into a soft, dry dough. If necessary, use your hands to bring it together but resist the urge to over-mix.

Add a smidgen more milk if needed. Turn the dough out onto a surface dusted with flour and swiftly shape it into a round about 3cm thick. Cut this into six triangular wedges.

Brush the tops of the wedges with a bit of milk, grate over the remaining cheese and sprinkle with a touch of cayenne pepper.

Grease the inside of the air fryer drawer with a tablespoon of olive oil, pop in the scones and cook for 12 minutes at 180°C. You might need to do this in batches.

To serve alongside the scones, blend the cream cheese with a generous amount of lemon zest in a small bowl, drizzle with a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil and season with black pepper.
