Jamie Vardy makes decision on Premier League transfer after announcing Leicester exit

Jamie Vardy has announced he is leaving the Foxes at the end of the season after a glittering 13-year career at the King Power Stadium – and he’s keen on remaining in the Premier League

Jamie Vardy may be finished at Leicester City – but he’s eyeing a Premier League swansong. The 38-year-old ex-England international has announced he is leaving the Foxes at the end of the season after a glittering 13-year career at the King Power Stadium.

Vardy won the Premier League and FA Cup, along with 26 caps for England in a rags-to-riches tale that is unlikely to be repeated. But Mirror Football understands that the striker still views himself as capable of doing a job in the top flight, and he is angling to remain there.

Vardy agreed a 12-month deal following Leicester ’s elevation under Enzo Maresca last season. However, if he were to put pen to paper again for the Foxes, he would only attract a Championship-level deal.

With the clock ticking down – if he plays on next term, he will do so into his 40th year – Vardy is anxious to squeeze what he can from what time he has left.

The forward scored eight times in the top flight this season for Leicester but the club’s demotion was confirmed after they again failed to find the net during the 1-0 defeat to Liverpool.

In a personal goodbye on the club’s media channels, Vardy said: “To the fans of Leicester, gutted that this day is here, I knew it would (come) eventually.

“I’ve had 13 unbelievable years at this club with lots of success, some downs but the majority all highs. It’s finally time to call it a day, which I’m devastated about. But I think the timing is right.

“I just want to sincerely thank you for taking me in as one of your own. Leicester will always, always have a massive place in my heart. I will make sure I’ll be following for the years to come in what I hope will be even more success for the club. As for now, this is my goodbye, but you will see me again soon. I promise.”

Vardy’s rise from the fifth tier of English football to its very pinnacle has been little short of remarkable. Vardy, who will make his final appearance at the King Power Stadium against Ipswich on May 18 before taking his leave a week later at Bournemouth, played his part in Leicester’s “Great Escape” at the end of the 2014-15 season.

His goals – he scored in a record 11 consecutive Premier League fixtures – were a major factor in the club’s 5000/1 title charge, which exposed him to Champions League football, and he also picked up an FA Cup winners’ medal in 2021.
