We all know that exploring a new city can work up quite an appetite, so when we had the opportunity to try out singer and TV host Jane McDonald’s favourite pub, we didn’t need much persuading.

After a busy afternoon wandering around Wakefield, including visits to its two shopping centres, Wakefield Bridge and Chantry Chapel, we decided to satisfy our hunger at The Three Houses in Sandal.

A quick Uber ride from Wakefield Kirkgate train station took us away from the chilly weather and into the cozy interior of the pub. Despite it being a bit quiet, the friendly staff gave us a warm welcome and we quickly settled down at a corner table right next to the bar.

Our server promptly took our drink orders; I opted for a strawberry and lime Rekorderlig while my dad went for a pint of Red Stripe. We were then handed menus and were delighted to see steak pie on offer.

After confirming that it was onion-free, we both decided it would be the perfect dish for our late lunch/early dinner. Twenty minutes later, our meals arrived on large round plates, each featuring a generous portion of piping hot steak pie, a gravy boat, a metal tub of chips, a heap of peas, and several pieces of cauliflower.

Cutting into the steak pie was a food lover’s dream and the perfect antidote to a cold February day, reports Yorkshire Live. The sight of the steak pie, with its layers upon layers of stringy, tender steak pieces under a flaky yet crispy pastry top, had me drooling. Every bite of the pastry, steak, chips, and al dente cauliflower – all smothered in gravy – was divine, and I found myself unable to stop eating.

The chips were flawlessly cooked and chunky – perhaps too many, but when has that ever been an issue? Unfortunately, my plate was empty before I knew it. However, the portion size was just right, leaving me full and satisfied.

Overall, the meal was exquisite and expertly prepared. It was probably one of the best pies I’ve ever had. I’m eager to return and sample more from the menu. For two pints and two steak pies at £38.90, it was worth every penny!

Back in September, Jane McDonald made a triumphant return to Loose Women on Friday, marking a full decade since she famously quit the show. The 61-year-old performer and TV host was a fan favourite on ITV’s long-running lunchtime talk show. She was a regular panellist on Loose Women from 2004 until 2014 before making the decision to quit the show.

Jane regularly appeared alongside the likes of Denise Welch, Coleen Nolan and Janet Street-Porter and the team were thrilled to welcome her back to the show to mark its 25th year on air.
