Jennifer Grey has lifted the lid on her steamy sex scenes with former co-star Patrick Swayze – and not all of them quite went to plan and she shared a huge insight
Jennifer Grey has admitted to “smoking a lot of weed” before doing a sex scene with on-screen love interest Patrick Swayze.
But the 64-year-old isn’t talking about the love scenes the pair made famous in their hit movie Dirty Dancing, which has been a cult hit since the small budget film was released back in 1987.
Fans might not know that it wasn’t Jennifer and Patrick’s first film together. They were both cast in 1984 movie Red Dawn. The action film follows a group of teenagers who flee to the mountains when Soviet and Cuban troops invade their small Colorado town.
She told The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast how the script called for a sex scene between leading man and relative newcomer Jennifer. However when it came down to doing the deed, Patrick must have been nervous too – because he turned up to filming drunk.
She said: “As an actor, you’re looking at all your stuff in the script, and you’re like, ‘Okay. I’m running. I’m shooting. I’m running. I’m throwing hand grenades. I’m killing myself with a hand grenade. But this is the only acting scene I get to do where I’m not doing action.
‘And so, I was super paranoid, and I was scared. I didn’t sleep the whole night. So when I went in to shoot my big love scene, my big … romantic scene with him. Keep in mind, I’m super young actor. ‘[I was] really taking everything seriously, and maybe a little annoying … because I wanna do good.’
“We were in this, you know, sleeping bag, and he was nervous or whatever, and he came into the sleeping bag drunk.” She says Patrick was so inebriated for the scene that he even forgot his lines. While Jennifer admitted she was “smoking a lot of weed in those days too”.
In the end, the scene was cut from the film anyway so fans never got to see it. She shared: “And then it got cut. And they said, “We’ll come back and reshoot it.” But, of course, they didn’t..'” Of losing out on her big moment, she added: “I was so angry because I was, you know, all self-righteous.”
The pair met again when they were both cast in Dirty Dancing. Recalling how Patrick knew he had annoyed her on the previous set, she said: “He pulled me down the hall and said to me, ‘I love you, I love you, and I’m so sorry. And I know you don’t want me to do the movie.’
‘And he got the tears in his eyes. And I got the tears in my eyes — not for the same reason. I was like, ‘Oh, this guy’s working me.’ And he goes, ‘We could kill it — we could kill it if we did this.’ ‘We go in there and he takes me in his arms and I was like, “Oh, boy. I’m done.”‘
Of course they were cast in the lead roles, as Dirty Dancing went on to become a surprise hit and one of the most romantic films of all time, propelling Patrick and Jennifer to super stardom as Johnny and Baby. It also took $214 million at the box office worldwide.
Tragically, Patrick died in September 2009 at the age of 57 after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Before that the dancer and actor had a huge film career appearing in hit movies like Ghost, Road House and Point Break.
