Jennifer Lopez just gave the clean girl nail trend a major update for spring as she showed off her pearly butterfly-inspired manicure at this year’s garden-themed Met Gala

Jennifer Lopez stuns at Met Gala in sparking form-fitting gown

The Met Gala might not be known for its relatable fashion and beauty moments, but if there’s one thing we can all try out it’s a great manicure. This year’s Met Gala saw A-listers hitting the red carpet dressed to the theme of Garden of Time, and one celebrity who made sure she was on theme right down to the tips of her fingers was Jennifer Lopez.

The singer hit the red carpet in an embellished sem-sheer gown with branch-like details, and her nails reflected her gown’s see-through pearly design. Her nails were done by celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik, who took to Instagram to show off the finer details of JLo’s nails.

He said: “Like a butterfly transforming in a shimmery chrysalis, I encased Jen’s polished natural nail in a translucent pearl cocoon.” Tom went on to explain how he created the subtle look, starting with an essential part of any manicure – cuticle care.

He explained that his “Not-so-secret weapon to hydrated and hands cuticles” is the Eucerin Aquaphor Healing Ointment, £6.50 here (was £12.99), which is perfect for soothing and hydrating dry skin and getting hands red carpet ready.

To get the cocoon-style look, he applied CND’s clear coffin-shaped nail tips, which sadly aren’t available in the UK right now. However you can get these almost identical Makartt French Nail Tips, £5.99 here, which come in a set of 500 and are perfect for getting a similar look.

Rather than leave the classic coffin shape, Tom filed JLo’s nails into a mid-length almond-style shape, and combined CND Top Coat with CND Flowerbed Folly, £16.70 here, to create a semi-sheer colour that matched Jennifer’s skin tone. He painted the combo directly onto her nail beds, extending it only slightly onto the tips and leaving the rest completely to give that transparent, see-through effect, before applying several layers of clear top coat to create a smooth transition from nail bed to tip.

To finish off and give it that sheer pearlescent finish, Tom used CND’s Pearl Obession, but you can get a similar look with essie’s Pure Pearlfection Nail Polish, £8.99 here. Apply a super thin, light coat all over your nails (including the still-clear tips) to give them a gorgeous pearly finish that catches the light beautifully.

JLo’s transparent nails are the perfect opportunity to bring a little Met Gala inspo to your every day looks, and if you’re a fan of the clean girl nails trend, its the perfect way to give the look a little upgrade for spring.
