Ex-Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann was struggling to stand and threw up on several occasions when police pulled him over after he was allegedly drink driving. The German was arrested in September at 1.30am following Oktoberfest celebrations.

Lehmann was still dressed in his lederhosen when he was stopped by police whilst driving his Audi A3. Bild report that the former Gunner was unable to stand without help and smelled of alcohol.

It is claimed that the stench of alcohol on the 55-year-old was so strong that officers could smell it through his window. Lehmann is then understood to have struggled to find his driver’s licence and instead showed his ID card before eventually finding his licence.

It is now being reported that Lehmann failed a breathalyser test and was sick on at least two occasions – one of those coming after he staggered to the roadside. Lehmann was taken to the Munich Institute of Forensic Medicine for blood tests and the public prosecutor’s office requested a fine of £60,000. The former Germany No 1 has filed an appeal, with a trial set for Thursday April 3.

The drink driving incident comes after he was fined £112,500 after being found guilty of property damage and attempted fraud by a German court. Lehmann was accused of using a chainsaw to saw through the roof beams of a garage on his neighbour’s property in the summer of 2022.

The verdict came after Lehmann appealed the initial ruling that saw him handed a suspended prison sentence and a fine of more than £350,000. Criminal charges were later dropped after the German reached an out-of-court settlement with his neighbour said to be in excess of £50,000.

Following the decision, Lehmann’s lawyer Florian Ufer said: “Mr Lehmann accepts responsibility. He has come to an agreement with his neighbour.” Ufer added Lehmann had also paid parking fees he’d been accused of avoiding.

Judge Tanja Walter had noted the 54-year-old ‘consistently portrayed himself as a victim of the justice system’. Public prosecutor, Stefan Kreutzer, added “that he obviously believes he is above the law”.
