Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch viewers were not impressed with Jess Glynne’s performance and they took to social media to share their thoughts
Jess Glynne celebrated the release of her third studio album with a live performance on Channel 4’s Sunday Brunch.
The 34-year-old singer was appearing on the cookery show to sing ‘Easy’ from her new album but her vocals seemed to leave a bad taste in the mouth of some viewers, who were turned off as Jess hit the high notes. The performance seemed to be perfectly good but there were a few that commented on X, formerly known as X, who went in on the singer.
Jess, who is in a relationship with former women’s football star Alex Scott, was accompanied by a full band for the performance, which ended the Channel 4 show as the credits rolled. One viewer hit out at what they were hearing by posting on X: “What artist makes your ears bleed and why is it Jess Glynne?”
Others were equally unimpressed and another slammed the singer, posting: “Sounding flat as a pancake there Jess Glynne #sundaybrunch“. This sentiment was shared by another, who posted: “Being stuck in a lift with Jess Glynne. Just the thought of it terrifies me #SundayBrunch #SundayBrunchC4”.
The backlash follows Jess saying that she almost quit music altogether as she didn’t like “the scrutiny” she is put under online, and the reaction to her performance seems to be a reflection of this. Speaking to The Independent, Jess explained that the “way it [online criticism] made me feel, the pure slog, the scrutiny,” and it led to her debate whether she wanted to walk away from her music career.
Jess said: “The amount that I’ve put in and the self-belief and the fight and the battles (I’ve gone through with) myself and with people around me to get to where I am, I was like: ‘Nah man, you can’t throw it all away.'” The singer is hoping that her new album will help people “understand the person” as Jess feels that she has been “misunderstood” for much of her career.
Jess added: “I feel like I have been misunderstood and I think that’s something that I don’t want to continue in my career. I want people to listen to my records and understand where they’ve come from, and understand the person that I am.”
