Jon Rahm has opened up on the emotional moment he shared with Tommy Fleetwood in the lead up to last year’s Ryder Cup, which he admits left him in tears

Jon Rahm has revealed he and Tommy Fleetwood were moved to tears after the European Ryder Cup team received personal messages from their loved ones before last year’s clash with the Americans at Marco Simone.

Rahm, who more than played his part in the victory in Italy, opened up on the moment during the DP World Tour’s soon-to-be-released documentary ‘Una Famiglia’. The documentary offers a behind-the-scenes look into the European setup on their way to winning back their Ryder Cup.

During the show, captain Luke Donald and his wife Diane arranged for each player to receive a personal message from a friend or family member ahead of the beginning of the event.

After watching their clips individually, the team congregated to watch a compilation of the messages. Rahm told the documentary cameras that he could not keep his composure after seeing Fleetwood’s son Frankie send his well wishes: “It really hit hard afterward in the team room,” the Spaniard said.

“On the couch are Tommy, myself, Nicolai [Hojgaard], and Ludvig [Aberg]. The first part of the video is Frankie Fleetwood talking to Tommy. Tommy starts crying, and then I start after him. This is full-on movie break up [tears]. And then you see the two stoics, 21 and 23-year-old just looking at me and Tommy like ‘What is this?'”

The cameras also panned to Fleetwood, who opened up on the emotional moment he shared with a player he usually competes against week in, week out. “How many times are you going to sit there crying next to someone you play with every week and be absolutely OK with it?” the Englishman commented.

“You just let everything out. You let everything go.” Fleetwood went: “I had Frankie, and I can’t even talk about it now. I think I played it about six times before I could actually see it with tears in my eyes. At the end of the video, there was a line that said, ‘The sun is shining on you now’. Wow yeah, it was intense. It was amazing.”

And the inspiring messages clearly helped Fleetwood and co, as they went on to reclaim the title they lost in record-breaking fashion two years earlier. The Englishman was able to secure the winning point for his team, defeating his American rival Rickie Fowler, who was forced to concede on the 16th hole after finding the water hazard.
