Liverpool fans will never forget Jurgen Klopp’s Premier League title celebrations, when he allowed his emotions to get the better of him while speaking to Sky Sports News

Jurgen Klopp may have been brought back to his own title celebrations after Arne Slot secured the Premier League in his first season at Liverpool. Slot, 46, orchestrated a 5-1 thrashing of Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, winning his first title in England and Liverpool’s 20th to sit alongside Manchester United in the all-time standings.

He emulated Antonio Conte’s feat at Chelsea back in 2017 by seizing the Premier League in his inaugural season. The city erupted into a sea of red – flares painting the sky and Liverpool jerseys as far as the eye could see, while ecstatic supporters took to the streets in droves to revel in the glory.

Meanwhile, Klopp, possibly glued to his TV at home, might have struggled to contain his emotions. His own Premier League victory lap could not have been more different, as a result of Covid-19 forcing celebrations to be confined indoors.

In 2020, amid the pandemic’s peak, when Chelsea handed Liverpool the title by besting Manchester City 2-1, Klopp rejoiced with his squad at Formby Golf Club and later at a fan-less Anfield for the trophy inauguration. Donning a Liverpool cap and jersey, Klopp delivered an impassioned address to Sky Sports News.

The juxtaposition of sheer joy from triumph over adversity and the shadows cast by the global crisis led him to be visibly moved. In an outpour of emotion, the German said: “It is unbelievable.

“It’s much more than I ever thought would be possible. For our fans: It’s for you. It is incredible. It is a joy to do it for you.

“We had to convince people and that is what we did together. It is a huge moment. I am completely overwhelmed. I had no idea it would feel like this…talking through the tears!”

His pride in his players was evident as he added: “It’s an incredible achievement by my players and it’s a huge joy for me to coach them. I haven’t waited 30 years, I have been here for four-and-a-half years, but it is quite an incredible achievement, especially with the three month break because nobody knew if we could go on.

“It is a mix of the history you created we are compared with. We had to write our own story. The atmosphere around the club, everyone lives football. We have a wonderful mix of players, all winners. It is so incredibly difficult in this competition but consistency drives us.”

The emotional weight of the interview became too much, and it was cut short as Klopp stepped away, unable to conceal his tears. Fast forward to the present day, and it’s possible the German might be seen at Anfield or around the city on the final day of the season.

He had previously stated his intention to avoid jinxing Slot’s side by staying away from the club. Yet, he hinted he might join any title celebrations while speaking at a fundraiser in South Africa.

Asked about returning to Liverpool, at a recent fundraiser, he said: “Yes, the plan is [to be in Liverpool] but not on the bus, I will be there with the people I saw on the bus. That’s the idea to be honest, but we will see.

“I think I will be there for the last game… I didn’t want to go earlier to be honest because I didn’t want to jinx it all the time. If I’m in the stadium for the first time and they lose, ‘oh f*** sake’. So I go there when it’s decided.”
