The PM’s spokesman said it was ‘completely farcical’ for Russia to claim the UK was the ‘main instigator’ of global conflict after Putin ‘launched an unjustified invasion on a sovereign country’

Downing Street has issued a furious rebuke to claims by Russia of the UK being the “main instigator” of global conflict.

The Prime Minister’s spokesman said it was “completely farcical” as it was Vladimir Putin who “launched an unjustified invasion on a sovereign country” with his brutal onslaught in Ukraine. The spokesman said: “Well, it’s completely farcical.

“There is just one country that has launched an unjustified invasion on a sovereign country that has abducted around 19,000 children, that continues to target critical national infrastructure, to starve innocent children and the elderly of heat and light. There is only one country that is sending thousands of its own sons and daughters to their deaths in pursuit of an imperialist ideology.”

It comes after Moscow launched an attack on the UK – and appeared to blame WWII on Britain. Foreign Intelligence Service said London “sees a threat to its interests” in the US and Russia improving relations with one another.

“As we can see, London today, just as it did on the eve of both world wars of the last century, acts as the main ‘instigator’ of the global conflict,” it said. “At the same time, the British themselves, obviously, are again counting on sitting it out on their island. It is time to expose them and send a clear signal to the treacherous Albion and its elites: you will not succeed.”

It comes as Keir Starmer spoke with US President Donald Trump this afternoon ahead of talks between US and Ukraine officials in Saudi Arabia tomorrow. A Downing Street spokeswoman said: “The Prime Minister spoke to President Trump ahead of the US-Ukraine dialogue in Saudi Arabia.

“The Prime Minister said that UK officials had been speaking to Ukraine officials over the weekend and they remain committed to a lasting peace. The Prime Minister said he hoped there would be a positive outcome to the talks that would enable US aid and intelligence-sharing to be restarted.”

It is understood the pair also spoke about trade tariffs. No10 said: “The two leaders also spoke about the economic deal they had discussed at the White House and the Prime Minister welcomed the detailed conversations that had already happened to move this forward. Both leaders agreed to stay in touch.”
