After a decade and a half of Tory mismanagement of the entire country, with families struggling to eat and pay bills, Labour leader Keir Starmer’s six pledges to voters offer a clear choice come the election
Everybody is aware of the serious problems facing this country after 14 years of Tory mismanagement.
Public services are on their knees, families are struggling to make ends meet, and our town centres have been neglected. It will fall to a future Labour government to do the tireless work of repairing this damage.
Today, party leader Keir Starmer sets out his six pledges for building a better Britain.
A Labour government will again deliver a health service that meets the needs of patients. It will ensure all parts of the country flourish, improve our schools, help households with the cost of living, and keep streets safe.
There will be criticism that Labour’s offer lacks boldness but Mr Starmer makes clear this is a down payment on his aspirations to create a better, more prosperous country.
Voters have a clear choice at the election between a Tory Party, which has no record to defend, and Labour, which has a costed plan to improve our lives and restore Britain’s pride.
Troubled water
United Utilities has pumped another raw sewage tidal wave into Windermere. Its disregard for the rules is matched only by its disregard for one of our top beauty spots.
Following the Tory privatisation of the water industry, money that should have been spent on tackling the pollution of our waterways has been siphoned into shareholders’ pockets.
The oversight of these companies is also pathetically weak. Since 2010, United Utilities has been sanctioned more than 200 times but paid fines of less than £10million.
This is not even a slap on the wrist for a company that has paid more than £400million to investors in the past couple of years.
The case for bringing water back under public control has never been stronger.
Under her skin
Queen Camilla was praised by animal lovers after vowing not to buy fur clothes.
Now she just needs to ask her royal guards to stop wearing bearskin caps.
