A gardening expert shared a simple yet effective method for keeping the slimy pests at bay using just a few household items, and people have claimed it’s worked wonders for them

One problem many gardeners all face is the constant battle of keeping pesky slugs out of their gardens.

Having spent endless time working to keep plants in their gardens vibrant, fighting unpredictable weather and mischievous pets, it can be disheartening to spot slugs treating your garden as a buffet. But a gardening whizz has come to the rescue with a simple yet effective trick for dealing with these slimy creatures..

Gardening guru Ish, who posts his green-fingered wisdom on TikTok as @gardening.with.ish, recently dished out a piece of advice that’s pure genius. In one of his enlightening clips, Ish breaks down why slugs tend to rock up more frequently in the winter due to damp conditions – which isn’t exactly a party for your plants.

The solution is to create a few homemade slug traps, which you can make in a snap. Ish demonstrates this by pouring water into a container, making sure it’s deep enough to stop those slugs in their tracks.

He tosses in a dash of fast-acting dry yeast, easily found in sachets for a bargain at just £1.50, giving it a good mix. Slugs can’t resist the stuff, according to Ish. Topping off the concoction with a teaspoon of sugar gets the yeast buzzing and bubbles forming, and to a slug, that’s like the aroma of a gourmet meal.

Ish explains: “Slugs will go in but, the chances are, they will not come out at all. When you’ve made your mix, pop this next to a plant that’s used to getting the most slug damage because they’ll be more interested in this than they will your plant.”

The expert described the technique as “straightforward” and requiring minimal effort. Many people were impressed with the tip, as evident from the enthusiastic comments. One curious viewer asked for an update, writing: “We need an update video. I’m invested.”

Another person shared their current struggle, stating: “They are eating my dahlia’s right now.” Additionally, someone was very thankful for the advice, saying: “Great tip Ish! I hate wasting good beer on slugs.”
