Lando Norris said he wants more precision from his McLaren team in the coming weeks. That’s despite another one-two finish for the Woking-based outfit at the Miami Grand Prix as they further cemented their status as the ones to beat in this year’s Formula 1 title race.

McLaren now have a whopping 105-point lead over nearest rivals Mercedes after only six rounds of the season. Norris won the Sprint in Miami but lost more ground to team-mate Oscar Piastri who made it three Grand Prix victories in a row.

And the Brit is keen to keep his McLaren colleagues on their toes as he hunts double title glory this year. “When you get to the top, there’s no time to relax,” he said.

“That’s all because of the scrutiny of other people talking and claiming things and coming up with bizarre stuff at times. So it’s more about dealing with the scrutiny. The team has to be even more precise with things, not make mistakes or do any silly little things.

“For the majority, it’s the same guys and girls all doing their job and trying to get the most out of the car. It’s more the external stuff that changes, but that’s out of your control. They’re doing a very good job of dealing with that and carrying on with what they’ve got.”

His “bizarre” comment referred to rivals’ comments about McLaren for most of the season so far. Norris has, on many occasions, called out others for suggesting his team has an unassailable performance advantage, despite winning all but one of the Grands Prix held so far in 2025.

Sunday’s Miami race was their most dominant performance to date with third-placed George Russell more than 37 seconds behind winner Piastri. Max Verstappen, who started on pole, put up a fight in the early stages but couldn’t keep the McLaren cars behind and was nearly 40 seconds down the road by the end of the race.

But Norris still insists more improvements are required. He said: “I think for the majority it’s been a natural evolution. The team has still improved a lot, even since last year, in terms of how we work – the car has improved, the obvious things have improved – but the way the team performs has improved quite a good amount and that has to continue.”

McLaren had little to complain about in Miami but Norris will have been disappointed to have lost more ground to Piastri. The Australian’s victory was the sixth of his F1 career – bettering his team-mate’s record of five despite having started 82 Grands Prix fewer.

“I think towards the end I started to get things a bit more back under control but there’s still definitely some things to work on from this afternoon,” Piastri said of his win in Florida. “Very happy with the win, very happy with the points but constantly got to keep learning. Very happy to be leaving Miami on top.

“It’s just incredible, the hard work that’s gone in. I remember two years ago here in Miami we were genuinely the slowest team. I think we got lapped twice. To now have won the Grand Prix by over 35 seconds to third is an unbelievable result and the hard work of every single person – firstly the people here at the track but everyone at the factory as well.”
