Leicester City are already in a fight to retain their Premier League status and they could be hit with a points deduction which would leave them in even greater peril

Leicester City will discover next week whether they will be hit with a points deduction which would leave their top-flight status hanging by a thread.

The Premier League are set to announce whether or not Leicester have breached the league’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules. Clubs are currently permitted to lose £105million over a three-year period, although this sum will be lower for Leicester as they spent the 2023-24 campaign in the Championship following relegation.

Leicester could be hit with a points deduction if they are in breach of said regulations next week, as outlined by The Mail.

And with Ruud van Nistelrooy’s side currently second from bottom in the league and two points from safety, a deduction could prove to be terminal for their survival hopes.

The Foxes have huge games against Crystal Palace and Fulham to come in the Premier League next week, plus an FA Cup third-round tie against QPR on Saturday. But all eyes are on the forthcoming Premier League decision as Van Nistelrooy attempts to help Leicester retain their top-flight status come May.

“The conversations that I’ve had with the hierarchy have been very good conversations. When I took the job I had a lot of questions about these topics,” the Dutchman said of the situation this week.

“It was very important for me to be able to understand where the club is and where they want to go to, and what my role in that would be.

“We started working together and so far there has been no sign that anything (I was told) is not right. Things have unfolded completely as it was said at the time. As long as that is the case, we are aligned. I don’t expect that to change.”

Leicester host QPR this weekend hoping to end a difficult run of five straight defeats.

The Foxes secured an instant return to the Premier League last season when they won the Championship title under Enzo Maresca. The Italian was then lured away by Chelsea before his successor, Steve Cooper, was sacked after just 12 matches.
