Retail heavyweight Lidl has issued an urgent recall over fears that a popular snack might carry the salmonella food poisoning bug. All batches of Sol and Mar Chicharricos barbecue Pork Scratchings, in 100g bags, are being withdrawn, irrespective of codes or expiry dates.

A spokesperson remarked: “Lidl GB is recalling the above-mentioned product due to the potential presence of salmonella which may cause severe gastrointestinal symptoms. If you have bought the above product, we advise you not to eat it.

“Customers are asked to return this product to the nearest store where a full refund will be given. We apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your cooperation.”

Salmonella infection typically leads to digestive symptoms, which can arise anywhere from six hours to six days after contact with the bacteria. The common signs include:.

Digestive Symptoms:

  • Diarrhoea (which could be bloody).
  • Stomach cramps or pain.
  • Feeling sick.
  • Being sick.
  • High temperature and shivers.
  • Other Symptoms:.
  • Head pains.
  • Muscle soreness.
  • Tiredness.

Loss of fluids (severe diarrhoea can especially affect babies, the elderly, or those with compromised immune systems).

While most people bounce back on their own within four to seven days, more serious cases may need medical care, particularly if dehydration sets in. Generally, healthy individuals get better within a week without needing medical help, but infants, the elderly, and those with weaker immune defences might face greater risks of adverse effects.

In the UK, a product recall is a procedure where a company withdraws a product from the market due to safety issues or regulatory non-compliance. This can occur when a product is discovered to be faulty, contaminated, or harmful to consumers.

Reasons for a Product Recall:

  • Food contamination (for instance, Salmonella, allergens not mentioned on labels).
  • Faulty products (such as electrical faults, fire risks).
  • Chemical hazards (like toxic substances in cosmetics or toys).
  • Mechanical problems (car recalls due to brake failures, for example).

The Process of Product Recalls in the UK:

  • Risk Identification – A company, regulator (like the Food Standards Agency or Trading Standards), or consumers report safety concerns.
  • Public Notification – The company releases a recall notice through government websites, news outlets, social media, and store alerts.
  • Product Withdrawal – The product is removed from stores and supply chains.
  • Consumer Response – Customers might be asked to return the product, cease using it, or ask for a refund/replacement.
  • Investigation and Rectification – Companies may alter their processes to avoid future problems.
