A tourist has warned other holidaymakers to avoid a ‘super crowded’ European destination, despite parts being ‘absolutely beautiful’ – and claimed a lesser-known spot is much better

There’s nothing more disappointing than accidentally booking a bustling tourist hotspot for what you hoped would be a calm and tranquil getaway.

For many, packed bars and beaches aren’t the ideal way to spend a few weeks off work in the summer. So one man has shared an alternative location you might want to consider if you’re after a hidden gem, rather than a crowded destination.

Travel lover @calebthill took to TikTok to advise people to steer clear of the Algarve in Portugal, despite admitting “parts of this region are absolutely beautiful.”

Although it boasts picturesque views, “parts of the town and beaches get super, super crowded,” he explained. Plus, it’s a three-hour drive from Lisbon, which he claimed is the best part of Portugal.

In the comments, one person suggested visiting outside of peak season and said October was the perfect time to go. Caleb agreed this would be a better way to appreciate the area’s beauty, without the stress of crowds – but, if you’re after a summer break, he recommended going somewhere else entirely.

He said he had an “absolutely incredible time” in Comporta, adding the beaches are “so stunning” and noted the nature here is protected from overdevelopment, leaving much of it untouched. Carvalhal Beach is a spot Caleb said he enjoyed, describing it as “bohemian chic” and “discreetly luxurious”.

“There’s also incredible restaurants, cafes, and boutiques all around the villages”, he added.

Caleb expressed his excitement to “go back” and relive the experience, describing it as “It’s the perfect luxury location without spending Italy or south of France prices”. He added: “Your money definitely stretches further here and it’s 100% worth it”.

In response to his post, many defended the Algarve, with comments such as: “Algarve is huuuge compared to Comporta, they are not comparable. Comporta is great, but Algarve has plenty of amazing quieter spots even in summer.”

Another follower suggested: “You guys, not instead.. just do both. Portugal is beautiful! Going to explore Madeira in May, can’t wait!”

One user humorously pointed out that he’d “given away” the secret, predicting that Comporta would be packed next summer.
