Crystal Palace resisted offers for Marc Guehi in the summer but a move to Liverpool could be on the cards with the Eagles already lining up a Reds youngster they want in return
Marc Guehi is eyeing up a move to Liverpool with Crystal Palace wanting one of the Reds’ brightest prospects in return.
The defender has seen his stock rise over the past 12 months, excelling for England at the Euros and was the subject of several bids from Newcastle in the summer. The Eagles opted to resist as they remained determined to keep hold of their centre-half.
Guehi, when he does eventually leave Selhurst Park, wants to join a Champions League outfit and Liverpool are said to be his preferred destination. His contract is winding down which could limit the fee Palace can demand when he does depart the capital.
The Eagles though are keeping tabs on Liverpool youngster Ben Doak, who is currently away on loan at Middlesbrough. He’s continued to impress and Palace’s hierarchy may look to include the Scot in any deal that involves Guehi’s exit.
Their priority target currently is Rayan Cherki, who plays for Lyon. They want to bring him in next month but if they fail to do so are likely to push harder for Doak, reports The Sun. Middlesbrough harbour hopes of keeping him at the Riverside Stadium, but that will depend on them getting promoted.
The 19-year wants to go back and play for Liverpool but may head to a new Premier League home if his route into the first-team is blocked. The Reds have made good use of their academy in recent years, but are well stocked when it comes to attacking resources.
Their pursuit of Guehi is likely to be influenced by what happens with Virgil van Dijk. The defender has entered the final six months of his deal but is tipped to extend his stay at Anfield. Alongside him Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate are options.
Palace themselves saw Michael Olise, one of their leading lights, leave for Bayern Munich in the summer. Oliver Glasner has several impressive individuals in his ranks – the likes of Guehi, Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton – and the Eagles will want to fend off interest in them.
After Guehi remained at the club in the summer he said: “Congratulations to our owners because they didn’t give in. Thank you to Marc, he was always open with me. All the rumours didn’t influence his performances. He always told me that he’s not pushing to leave Crystal Palace and that is always the most important thing for me.”
