Liverpool are preparing for the summer arrival of new manager Arne Slot, but there is still work to do before current boss Jurgen Klopp waves goodbye to the Reds

We’re well and truly into the home stretch of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool tenure, with just two more league games before the manager says goodbye.

Arne Slot, currently in charge at Feyenoord, is poised to take over. While the Reds have yet to officially confirm the arrival of the Dutchman, an agreement is understood to be in place.

Before the new man comes in, Klopp will take charge of games against Aston Villa and Wolves to round off the season. After that comes an important summer transfer window, with the club’s decision-makers having work to do ahead of the first post-Klopp season.

Slot’s task is part of our focus today, while there’s also a bit of a look back at one of the Reds’ previous decorated bosses. Here are Mirror Football‘s latest lines from around Anfield.

Slot responds to transfer warning

Arne Slot has responded to claims from former Everton transfer chief Marcel Brands that he should avoid just bringing in Dutch players when he moves to Anfield. A number of the manager’s Feyenoord stars have been linked with a Liverpool move, including captain Lutsharel Geertruida.

“That’s good advice from people who have worked in the Premier League and have made their mark in football,” Slot said, as reported by Voetbal Zone. “But I don’t think you should always judge based on moments from the past.

“I also read everywhere about the success rate of Dutch coaches in England. There are so many variables. If a player is good, it shouldn’t matter what level he comes from. But at the moment, there’s no talk of anything because nothing has been officially confirmed yet.”

Elliott issues rallying cry

Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott wants the club to follow Sunday’s victory over Tottenham with more victories to end on a high note. The youngster scored the pick of the goals in Sunday’s 4-2 win, bringing his tally for the season up to four..

“Recent weeks haven’t been good enough and we wanted to achieve a lot more, but with the crowd behind us, in the last two games, we want to go out with a bang,” the former Fulham star told club media. “We just want to win both of them.

“We have Champions League football next season, that’s where this club belongs and deserves to be. There’re going to be more special nights and hopefully we can put it right next season again.”

Verdict on former boss Benitez

Former Liverpool defender Stephen Warnock has given a less-than-complimentary assessment of Rafa Benitez’s man-management at Anfield. Warnock, who came through the Reds’ academy, was sold to Blackburn a few years into the Spaniard’s tenure.

“He didn’t speak to anyone. His man-management was horrendous, absolutely horrendous,” Warnock said during an appearance on the Undr The Cosh podcast.

“I’ve said this to loads of people, [he’s] tactically brilliant. Man-management? Zero. Absolutely no idea how to speak to anyone.”
