Harvey Elliott was besieged by Liverpool supporters after heading to the shops shortly after his late winning goal against Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League

Liverpool star Harvey Elliott has revealed how he was mobbed during a shopping trip after his late heroics against Paris Saint-Germain.

The 21-year-old had only nipped into his local branch of Sainsbury’s for some toilet roll and milk when he was suddenly besieged by Reds fans. The encounter happened just days after the midfielder scored a vital 87th-minute winner with his first touch at the Parc De Princes.

Elliott said supporters of the Premier League leaders were eager to thank him for his crucial role shortly after coming on as a substitute in last week’s 1-0 away victory. The result handed Arne Slot’s side the advantage in the Champions League round of 16, ahead of Tuesday night’s return clash at Anfield.

Elliott has also opened up about the special moment he shared with fans inside the ground after the game as he warmed down. “It was a great feeling walking back out when the Liverpool fans were still in the stadium,” he said in an interview with former Manchester United and Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster.

“Hearing them singing and having that moment with the fans, it was just such a lovely feeling. These are pinch me moments where you think to yourself, ‘is it really happening?’ I had my mum calling me after the game, I had my dad calling me, and they were all crying out of happiness. I didn’t understand the magnitude of that goal.

I went to Sainsbury’s yesterday, and there were Liverpool fans there. I wanted to go in and get some milk and toilet roll, and it literally took me about half an hour. It just sums up the fans. It’s a massive club, the fans are so passionate and it makes you want to embrace and experience these moments more.”

Despite Elliott’s big moment in Paris, he was left out of the starting XI for Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Southampton on Saturday. After a lacklustre first half where the Reds conceded on the stroke of half-time, Elliott was then introduced by Slot for the second half in place of Curtis Jones.

Liverpool’s head coach admitted after the game that leaving him on the bench may have been the wrong move. When quizzed by the Liverpool Echo whether he found it difficult to leave Elliott out of the starting line-up, Slot said: “It is always a difficult decision not to start Harvey, not to start Wata (Wataru Endo), not to start all the other ones I don’t play.

“But if someone comes in for five minutes, touches his first ball and scores a goal and then you change your whole idea about all the line-ups you made before, that would be a bit out of line – a bit weird as well.

“He got 45 minutes today because he did so well in Paris. But there’s also a reason why I played so many times the other ones and all the time they deserved that trust. But today, if I could do it one more time over, I would have started it differently than I started today…but you don’t know this in advance.”
