LIVERPOOL 2-1 WOLVES: Mohamed Salah and Luis Diaz were among the goal scorers as the Reds re-established their seven point lead at the top of the Premier League despite the visitors making them sweat in the second-half
Liverpool extended their lead at the top of the Premier League as they saw off a spirited Wolves side at Anfield.
The Reds had seen Arsenal close in on them but responded 24 hours later as Mohamed Salah continued his own pursuit towards the Golden Boot as he got in on the act on Merseyside, but the visitors made them sweat in the second-half as Matheus Cunha continued to showcase his brilliance.
Wolves, who have won just once since Boxing Day, fell behind early on when Luis Diaz bundled home from close range. It was the Colombian who was central to Liverpool’s second, going through before being bought down by Jose Sa as the referee pointed to the spot.
Salah converted from 12 yards, scoring down the middle as he celebrated for the 28th time in all competitions this season. Cunha’s free-kick was the closest Wolves came before the break, but his effort went narrowly wide.
The visitors had an early chance to half the deficit in the second-half when Marshall Munetsi was sent through, but Alisson made a crucial one-on-one save that prevented Wolves from getting their tails up. Liverpool thought they’d been awarded a second penalty, only for VAR to come in and help reverse the decisions.
Cunha did bring Wolves back into the game with an impressive strike from distance as the side sat 17th in the table continued to cause problems. Liverpool’s quality dropped off in the second-half as Arne Slot made tweaks to help retain their slender lead and they were able to hold on.
Here’s the lowdown from Anfield.
