The M5 has come to a complete standstill and is closed in both directions following a “serious collision” on the major motorway this morning.

All lanes have been closed on a stretch of the M5 in Devon between J28 (Cullompton) and J29 (Exeter Airport). The horror crash was reported this morning after 9.30am with police and emergency services still at the scene.

Drivers have been warned to expect huge delays as diversions were put in place to avoid the terrifying crash site.

Air ambulance landed at the scene

Police and ambulances rushed to the crash site on the M5 this morning.

Travellers also caught the moment the air ambulance was landing on the mototway following the horror collision.

Northbound carriageway has reopened

National Highways South West confirmed the northbound carriageway has reopened but drivers should “allow time for delays to ease”.

The southbound carriageway remains closed between J28 and J29 and long delays have been reported on the approach.

Drivers warned to ‘plan ahead’

National Highways has warned dirvers about the delays on this affected route this morning.

Travellers were advised to allow extra journey time, plan ahead, re-route or even delay the journey.

Northbound diversion route

Vehicles travelling north on the M5 must follow the solid circle diversion symbols.

This route is:

  • Exit the M5 northbound at J29
  • Turn right and join the A30 and continue to the next roundabout
  • At the roundabout, turn right and continue northbound on Ambassador Drive/Cumberland way until the junction with the B3181
  • Join the B3181 (Main Road) and continue northbound towards Cullompton
  • Pass through Cullompton, and then re-join the M5 northbound at J28

Southbound diversion route

Travellers looking to go south on the M5 must follow directions on the solid tringle diversion road symbols.

This route is:

  • Exit the M5 southbound at J28 and turn right at the traffic light controlled junction to join the A373
  • At the roundabout, head straight over and join the B3181 (Station Road)
  • Continue southbound on the B3181, passing through Cullompton, Westcott, Budlake (running parallel to the M5) and Broadclyst until the junction with Cumberland Way
  • Join Cumberland Way southbound and then at the next roundabout continue straight over onto Moor Lane
  • Continue southbound to then re-join the M5 at J30

Details of the horror crash have not been shared but National Highways confirmed both Devon & Cornwall Police and emergency services are on the scene with National Highways Traffic Officers.

‘Serious collision’ forces M5 to close

National Highway South West revealed diversions have been put in place following a horror crash on the M5 in Devon.

The agency said: “The #M5 southbound between J28 #Cullompton and J29 @Exeter_Airport is closed following a serious collision. All emergency services attending including @DevonAirAmb Diversion details to follow.”
