Music superstars Madonna and Sir Elton John have “finally buried the hatchet” as their long-running feud has come to an end. After years of savage swipes and digs, their public spat is over thanks to a very unexpected reunion.

The two music icons even hugged each other backstage when they were forced to be in the same room while taking part on Saturday Night Live. Madonna, 66, was able to shrug off years of abuse from Elton, 78, as she headed to the hit US show to watch the Rocket Man star perform.

Their spat stretches back to the early noughties when Elton slammed Madonna’s song for Die Another Die as “the worst Bond tune ever”.

He even accused her of lip-synching during her live shows in 2007 and five years later, reignited the feud ahead of her Super Bowl Half Time Show as Elton told the Queen of Pop to “lip-synch good”.

The insults didn’t stop there as he once labelled Madonna “a fairground stripper” and declared “her career is over” during the same year she won Best Original Song at the Golden Globes.

Madonna used her acceptance speech to hit back at the I’m Still Standing hitmaker as she said: “[Elton John is] brilliant, and I adore him, so he’ll win another award. I don’t feel bad.”

She has now declared the end of their feuding in an Instagram post alongside a snap of them together at Saturday Night Live. Madonna insisted: “We Finally Buried the Hatchet!!!”

“I went to see @eltonjohn perform on SNL this weekend!! WOW. I remembered when I was in high school- I snuck out of the house one night to see Elton perform live in Detroit! It was an unforgettable performance that helped me understand the transformative power of music.

“Seeing him perform when I was in high school changed the course of my life. I had always felt like an outsider growing up and watching him on stage helped me to understand that it was OK to be different-to stand out- to take the road, less traveled by. In fact, it was essential.

“Over the decades it hurt me to know that someone I admired so much shared his dislike of me publicly as an artist. I didn’t understand it. I was told Elton John was the musical guest on SNL and I decided to go.”

She added: “I needed to go backstage and confront him . When I met him, the first thing out of his mouth was, ‘Forgive Me’ and the wall between us fell down.

“Forgiveness is a powerful tool. Within minutes. We were hugging. Then he told me had written a song for me and he wanted to collaborate. It was like everything came full circle!! And you can tell everybody , This is Your Song……….”
