Ruben Amorim took aim at Marcus Rashford after Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Fulham as he explained how he would rather pick goalkeeping coach Jorge Vital than a player who “doesn’t give the maximum”

Manchester United coach Jorge Vital is in the spotlight after manager Ruben Amorim name-dropped his staff member during his rant about Marcus Rashford.

The England forward was left out of United’s matchday squad ahead of their 1-0 win at Fulham on Sunday night, with the 27-year-old not named on the bench since December 30.

Amorim took aim at Rashford after the game as he explained how he would rather pick goalkeeping coach Vital than a player who “doesn’t give the maximum”.

Vital, 63, has worked with Ruben Amorim at both Sporting Lisbon and Braga previously and has followed the young coach through his rise up the ranks as one of Europe’s most highly-rated managers.

He played mostly for low-level Portuguese clubs as a player but did have a spell with Sporting Lisbon before making his name as a keeper coach.

Vital had two spells with Braga as a coach – the first for 10 years – and two with former club Lisbon after returning with Amorim.

He arrived at United with his fellow Portuguese coach along with assistant Carlos Fernandes, first team coaches Adelio Candido and Emanuel Ferro, fitness coach Paulo Barreira and analyst Eduardo Rosalino.

Amorim mentioned Vital while showing his frustration over Rashford’s commitment levels.

After the Fulham win, he said: “I would put Vital before I put the player who does not give the maximum every day so I will not change in that department.

“It’s always the same reason. The reason is the training. The way I see what a footballer should do in training, in life, every day. If things don’t change, I will not change. Same situation for every player, if you do the maximum, if you do the right things, we can use every player.”

Rashford later responded to Amorim’s call-out as he posted a simple message on Instagram, writing: “Congratulations on the win lads.”
