Marcus Rashford has become a useful asset for Manchester United’s INEOS owners, who would like to sell the academy graduate in the upcoming January transfer window
Manchester United are trying to drum up interest in Marcus Rashford ahead of the January transfer window.
Rashford has been deemed expendable by United chiefs, who know they need to balance the books in order to comply with financial fair play rules. Ruben Amorim is keen to strengthen the United squad he inherited from Erik ten Hag in January, but the club needs to sell players in order to reinvest the funds.
Rashford has scored three goals in five games for United since the arrival of Amorim, but makes the most sense on the balance sheet. Selling homegrown players counts as pure profit in terms of profit and sustainability rules, making academy graduate Rashford a useful asset to have.
United have spent over £100million to bring in Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirzkee in the past two summer transfer windows and Rashford has therefore been earmarked for a sale. The club hopes that the memories of his 30-goal season in 2022/23 will help spark some interest.
The Daily Mail reports that United would listen to offers in the region of £40m for the 27-year-old. That is a huge drop off from the £100m they believe he was worth in the summer of 2023 after the best campaign of his career.
There is an obvious problem United faces in trying to sell Rashford though: his wages. The England international is paid around £325,000 per week, having signed a bumper contract until June 2028 on the back of his strong form.
Very few clubs can afford to match those demands, leaving a tiny pool of potential buyers in January. In reality, the club knows they are unlikely to generate much interest, despite previous admiration from Paris Saint-Germain.

For his part, Rashford is trying to embrace the fresh start under Amorim. He has seven goals and three assists in 23 appearances this season and is enjoying the new ideas of the Portuguese coach.
“He (Amorim) has come in in a busy period and hopefully the connection keeps building and growing,” he said recently. “He’s come in with a great attitude and it’s passed onto the players. The atmosphere is one of the most special things about his club and playing at this great stadium is always a great feeling.
“It is early on but I feel energised and ready for the next game. This game has only just finished but the next one is always the focus for the players.”
United are in action against Viktoria Plzen on Thursday night in the Europa League before taking on Manchester City in the derby on Sunday in the Premier League. Amorim has lots of work to do, with his side sitting 13th in the top flight, eight points off the top four.
