Manchester United must brush off latest defeat to Nottingham Forest with Ruben Amorim gearing up to face outgoing Premier League champions City in the derby on Sunday

Manchester United are having to pick themselves back up after Nottingham Forest inflicted a 13th Premier League defeat already this season, with Sunday’s derby against City at Old Trafford offering Ruben Amorim a fresh chance to find something to cheer.

Wide man Anthony Elanga scored a brilliant early solo goal to sink United at the City Ground on Tuesday night, with the Sweden international just the latest former player United may regret saying goodbye to.

But there was one positive to take with Mason Mount coming off the bench in his first appearance since recovering from another injury. He could even be part of Amorim’s starting XI against outgoing champions City this weekend.

Here are the big stories from in and around Old Trafford during another turbulent week.

Elanga regrets

Anthony Elanga sent the perfect message to Manchester United on Tuesday night after scoring a brilliant goal against his old side in Nottingham Forest’s 1-0 win.

Elanga was deemed surplus to requirements when he was sold to Forest for about £15million in 2023, but the winger has gone from strength to strength at the City Ground and you could make an argument that the Sweden star would get in the current United starting XI.

And he is not the only one United may regret saying goodbye to.

Mount boost

Manchester United fans have hailed the return of Mason Mount from injury and believe the ex-Chelsea star can pull the team out of their slump if he can stay fit for the rest of the season. Mount made his first appearance since December in United’s 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest on Tuesday night, coming on for Joshua Zirkzee in the 78th minute.

He gave a promising display that showed signs of his ability as he curled an effort and watched it narrowly flash past the post shortly after coming on. Boss Ruben Amorim will be pleased with how he pressed the opposition and looked to get involved in the build-up play.

And supporters have been left suitably impressed.

Dorgu claim

Martin O’Neill claims he could’ve played to the same level as Patrick Dorgu during Manchester United’s latest defeat – despite being north of 70. The Red Devils resumed Premier League action but suffered another loss, this time at Nottingham Forest.

Anthony Elanga’s first-half strike was enough to settle the game against his former club as Ruben Amorim’s difficult tenure continued at the City Ground. Dorgu is currently the only signing he has made with the ex-Leece man capable of playing the wing-back role that features in the manager’s system.

O’Neill during his playing days did win two European Cups, both of those in Nottingham under Brian Clough, but has been retired for nearly 40 years with his comments a damning reflection of the Dane.
