Manchester United have been without central defender Leny Yoro since the beginning of the Premier League season and the young Frenchman has stepped up his recovery from a pre-season injury

Leny Yoro has stepped up his recovery to provide Manchester United with a timely boost after he took to the grass for the first time since suffering his injury in the summer.

The Frenchman is yet to feature for the club in a competitive fixture following his blockbuster transfer in July, where United beat Real Madrid to his signature. The 18-year-old required surgery after picking up a foot injury in a pre-season friendly against Arsenal during the club’s tour of the United States.

Yoro was ruled out for a period of at least three months and has been diligently working on his rehabilitation in the aftermath of his operation. The former Lille star could be seen running on a treadmill during the international break and has now stepped up his recovery in taking to training outdoors at United’s Carrington training base.

Under the watchful eye of medical staff, Yoro conducted a number of drills before undertaking a gym session. The central defender is still short of participating in any group sessions however.

Speaking in September, United boss Erik Ten Hag confirmed the defender was on the correct trajectory in his recovery. The ex-Ajax boss was cautious in his assessment however.

He said: “It is very pleasing that his rehab is going in the right direction and I expect him soon, but what I mean by soon, is that he is now in the right planning process. He is in the right spot and he will return as soon as possible into the squad and then the team training.”

The Dutchman is still dealing with a lengthy injury list despite Yoro’s continued progress. Ten Hag may still be missing seven players for United’s clash against Fenerbahce, where they will be welcomed by former manager Jose Mourinho.

United’s boss is still expected to be without Yoro for a further month. The 13-times Premier League champions have seen a depleted backline for much of the season.

Fellow defenders Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are all continuing to recover from their respective injuries. The latter two players are nearing their return having not featured at all this term but are being treated ‘very carefully’, despite the Red Devils’ need for a left-sided full-back.

Mason Mount continues to recover from a knock picked up ahead of the international break while Casemiro is currently being assessed for a calf injury. Kobbie Mainoo is also not expected back until next month after suffering a thigh injury and missing England’s most recent camp.
